Should he see the vet now or can it wait

assie2071 Apr 29, 2007 02:29 PM

My 14month old is coming due for his vacc boosters soon, but he has been behaving strangly and I am wondering if I should take him in now. He has been doing this strange weezing/open mouth breathing. He has only done it twice once a few months ago and again a few days ago. Each "attack" only lasted about 10 sec if that and he was fine immediatly afterward and the rest of the time. It is something I will bring up to my vet when he get his vacc but I am wondering if he should be seen earlier or if it can wait till the vacc are due.

Hi There,

It's impossible to tell if what is going on with your kitty is serious or not, but I would take him in ASAP. If he is really wheezing, he may have feline asthma, which can be extremely serious. Asthmatic cats will often have open-mouth breathing when they are in the midst of an attack.

Your vet will probably want to take a chest x-ray and possibly start your kitty on steroids if he has asthma. There is a characteristic pattern on x-rays, known as "donuts" that you see in asthmatic cats, which is what the vet would look for.

Good luck, and please keep us updated.

Regards,
PHKitkat
