Congestion

hstanley May 17, 2007 03:27 AM

I have a cat that came home from the vet a week ago and started sneezing about four days ago... Now he is so congested he can hardly breathe... He is on Prednisone and Amoxicillin... Anyone have any suggestions... I feel so bad for him... My husband is taking him back to the vet today...

Hi There,

First, I would ask the vet about stopping the Pred. It suppresses the immune system and might be why your cat got sick in the first place. Staying on the pred will likely delay his recovery.

Another thing is to possibly start giving your baby L-Lysine. What he has is probably viral, and, if so, antibiotics won't help. Lysine comes in 500 mg tablets and the usual dose is 1/4 tablet twice daily. You should clear this with the vet first, though.

Your vet may prescribe a decongestant, although many don't. Cats don't always react well to these kinds of drugs. Please remember that many human drugs are toxic to cats so don't try anything on your own.

If your kitty is eating, chances are that he will recover with no problems. If he should stop eating, it's important to not let it go as cats can develop fatty liver disease within 2 - 3 days. Some very congested cats may need to be syringe fed until they start eating on their own.

Good luck, and please let us know how it goes.

Regards,
PHKitkat
