12y.o. male cat is not urinating

cwjr Jun 01, 2008 11:21 AM

my 12y.o. male cat may not be urinating.. we have 3 cats and its hard to tell who's pee is who's. he does poop, but i can't tell if he's urinating or not. a little history: he recovered from acute kidney failure back in september 2007. he's been fine ever since. but this last week he's starting to act similar to the way he acted when he had the kidney failure. right now he still eats, drinks, likes to play a little, and poops. but he is more lethargic than normal and just has that look on his face that something is wrong.
i took him to the vet the other day and they took his vitals and coudn't find anything wrong that would need further examination. i have read that a male cat who cannot urinate will die in a couple days. now i'm not sure if he is urinating or not. how can i tell?
or should i not worry.. as long as they are eating and drinking they should be okay right?

Hi,

When a cat stops urinating, it's a medical emergency, even if you think he is acting ok otherwise. I sincerely hope that by now either you know your cat has urinated, or you have taken him to a vet. If he is blocked you will lose him.

Taking a cat's vitals will rarely turn up anything helpful, as far as diagnosis. A cat that has been in kidney failure needs to be monitored very closely. This means having labwork done at least every 3 months, both a blood panel and urinalysis need to be done.

Please update on how your boy is doing.

Regards,
