Kitty Diaper Rash???

BlackHeartNY Jun 23, 2008 12:42 AM

I'm currently taking care of a little guy that is about 8 weeks old. However, this poor baby is always getting poop stuck to his butt and surrounding area and I'm having to wash him up. Tonight, I was cleaning him up and saw that his butt and genital area is so raw and pink, but I don't know what to do for him! I'm afraid to use any "baby" products on him because I don't know if these can harm him in any way. Does anyone out there have any suggestions on what I can use to clear up this poor babe's problem? I very much appreciate any replies!

Hi There,

I know that it is ok to use a very small amount of some diaper rash ointments on kittens, but you will have to check with your vet as far as brands.

If the kitten has soft stools and/or diarrhea, I recommend a vet check. Dehydration can be an issue in kittens with diarrhea, and if you bring in a stool sample as well it can be checked for parasites. I would also have the kitten's rear shaved (if he has long hair) so there is less for the stool to stick to. I prefer using baby shampoo for cat and kitten clean-ups, any brand is fine.
