treating diarrhea

Does anyone have recommendations for treating diarrhea in cats.
several weeks ago Murphy had several episodes of diarrhea but was eating, normal activity and this resolved. I gave hima cat food with rice that seemed to help. I attributed it to changing the cat food or a hairball. Now another cat,Mat has the same.It is hard since both are persians and the loose stool gets messy in long hair. I called the vets office and they said to give peptobismal 1 tsp 3 times a day. I bought it last time but was too afraid to use it since several websites say it could be toxic to a cat. Another website recommended 1 tsp of plain yogurt. If anything I though of giving 1/2 tsp of peptobasmal.
Any ideas to treat diarrhea? Today is Saturday and if it continues I will take a sample to the vet or bring the cat if he seems dehydrated on Monday.

A vet visit to rule out anything serious is a good idea. One thing, besides yogurt, that seems to work is plain canned pumpkin. A teaspoon or two a day, or even twice a day usually helps the problem. It also helps with constapation.
