stray kitten with "gunky" eyes

carmeny Oct 29, 2008 06:58 PM

Today when i was going to work i noticed a stray kitten in our yard - we live on an acreage and stray kittens "appear" often! My cats are fixed. She appears to only be a few weeks old and her little eyes were full of gunk. I took her in the house and cleaned her eyes and fed her. I phoned me vet and asked a few questions. he said to quarantine her from my other cats and to clean her eyes and use an antibiotic eye drop. Could this be something serious like feline leukemia etc.
I swear with 7 dogs, 7 cats, 5 birds and a hedgehog i should have been a vet!

It is sometimes an upper respiratory infection (similar to a common cold), sometimes a herpes infection and sometimes a bacterial thing. Hard to tell unless your vet runs tests and cultures the gunk. I think your vet was right to recommend isolation in case it is something that can be passed on to the others. Good luck with the kitten!
