Hello all.

I just found this forum and have spent the last hour or so reading and enjoying all the advise and stories. I wanted to share with you something that recently happened in my house.

About 2 months ago, a pregnant stray adopted me and my husband. We immediately fell in love. She was very poor in size and health. If I had not started feeding her, it is my true belief, she would not have survived another week. Well, we let her into our home and our hearts. We have 6 other cats, so we have been keeping her in our basement (heated). Five weeks ago, she had a litter of 4 kittens. 3 females and 1 male. What an experience it has been. Well, they were not even a week old and I noticed that the male had what looked like a growth of some sort in his eye (their eyes had not yet opened). We took him to the vet, he had an infection, when the vet started to squeeze his eye, there was a lot of puss that came out. Well, a few minutes and $35 later, we left with a tube of ointment to put on his eye 4 times a day. A week after all of this, one of the females (the runt) had some anal tissue protruding from her little butt and yet another trip to the vet was made. Again, after a few minutes and another $35 later, we were sent home with another tube of ointment to apply 4 times a day. We were told to do this for her for about 7 to 10 days, but things should look much better in just 3 to 4 days. Well, after 5 days, the lump of tissue had grown larger and was protruding further out than before. We decided to take her back to the vet and was told she needed surgery (now keep in mind, that at this point, she was not even 3 weeks old). The vet had told me that because of her age and size, she had a 50-50 chance of coming out of the anesthesia. Well, after surgery, she woke up and was fine. She had to have a stitch to secure the anal tissue and we were instructed to bring her back in a week to have the stitch removed. Everything was going great and she was healing nicely. We had the stitch removed and she seemed fine. I thought that if she could make it throught this, she can make it through anything. I was so wrong. My husband and I grew so attached to her that we decided that we would keep her as well as her mother. She was about half the size as her brother and sisters, so we wanted to give her a fighting chance by hand feeding her some supplemental kitten formula. That seemed to be going great, she was eating like a little pig, sleeping, playing, things seemed normal. This went on for almost another week. Last Saturday night, she was sleeping on my bed and my husband said she woke up, seemed confused and started running in a circle, crying. She did this for about 15 seconds and seemed fine. The next day was awful! She seizured and stopped breathing. I had to breath for her and she finally came out of it. We made a frantic call to the emergency vet # (this was on Sunday). She told us to bring her in right away. She put Karo syrup on her gums to bring her out of it. She suspected that she was having a low blood sugar shock. We brought her home and she got progressively worse. At this point, she would just lie there, unresponsive, almost paralyzed or like she was in a coma. The only reaction she would have, was when she would start to convulse. The whole day went like this, about every 2-3 hours. Finally, through the night, it was about every half hour or so. I was to the point that I would just beg her to go to sleep and not wake up as to end her suffering. My heart was breaking for her. It seemed so unfair for a little baby to suffer as she was. First thing Monday morning, we called the vet and told them we would like to have her put to sleep. We took her right in and had it done immediately. This was a week ago today. I have been torturing myself, thinking that I made her suffer this way. I tried so hard to keep her alive. All I can think about is how selfish I was not to have her put to sleep sooner.

Anyway, I just wanted to share this with all of you. You all seem to be such good "parents" to your cats. I feel we are all kindred spirits of sorts. I am glad that I found this forum!

I am attaching a picture we took last Saturday, she was just 4 weeks old.

Welcome to our forums. I am sorry to hear about the loss of your sweet little kitten. You did the right thing (PTS). You and your husband tried your best to help her.
How are the other five kittens doing? If I have it right they are five weeks old. They must be so cute running around now. You will have to post pictures. Have you been over to the general forum? Purball just posted pictures of her kittens. She has five kittens. One female and four males. I think they are about 7 weeks old now.

Thank you, JaimeMarie, I am glad I found this forum. I have a feeling I will be here a lot. I posted a picture of the kitten that I lost. Were you able to view it? Some photos I can see, some I can not. At the end of my original post, I had her pic, but I am unable to view it. I sent an email to the support department, but I have not heard anything back yet.

I was able to see your photo but it's because I right click and went to the webpage it's on. Did you use your drop down screen at the bottom and pick that photo or did you try to copy the link onto the page? The kitten was a doll. Do you have pictures of the rest?

I had to go peek at the rest. The three of them are so cute! I do have to say Manny stole my heart with that picture. Boots and Squeeks (is that right) are cuties to. What does the mother look like?

Did you say you have six other cats? How old are they, and what are their personalities?
I have 4 cats. But My story is long so I'm posting a link for you to follow to get the story.

I am attaching a pic of Mama (the mother to the kittens). The rest of my cats all have different personalities. I have 2 black cats, one male (Timmy) and one female (Sheba). No relation to each other. The male is about 5 years older than my female. I also have 2 gray and white cats, one male (Simon) and one female (Bacon - she is long haired). Again, not relation to each other. I have an orange tiger, female (Murphy). I also have a gray tiger cat, female (Shadow - we call her Peanut).

When I moved in with my husband, he had Simon, Bacon, Murphy, and Timmy. I had a hard time getting close to Simon at first. He was abused by the woman that owned him before, she used to beat him with a broom. It took a while, but he came around and realized that I would never hurt him. Bacon is very lovable, she loves to give kisses. It was about a week before I could even see Timmy. He always hid behind the couch, all I could see was his eyes. He is very shy around people, now if he can catch me sitting down, he climbs all over me. He sleeps on my head at night when we go to bed. Murphy, well...she is very unique. She is one of those cats that you can pet on the stomach, and she will roll over on her back and loves every minute of it. You can pet her with your feet, pick up, carry anywhere with you. Sheba is the cat that I brought here with me. I had her for about a year before I moved in here, took all the cats a while to get used to, now they are the best of friends. Sheba is very lovable. If you walk into my house, she will be at your feet begging for you to pet her. And then there is Shadow (Peanut), we welcomed her into our home a year ago this month as a 10 week old kitten. She is very independent, only wants to be pet when convenient for her. The only time you can catch her in a loveable mood is right when she wakes up, then she is cuddly.

I will upload some pictures later on of the rest of my "kids" later on.

It's interesting that you had one cat and your husband had four. I would have thought the other way around. I just always think of women having cats.
I shouldn't my boyfriend has Moxie. And she is his cat. My dad's cat is Lizzy. I guess it's just a stereo type.
The little girl kit really looked like the Momma cat. Momma has such big eyes. What did you name her again?

This is the husband, and I love cats. Dogs are OK, but cats, especially kittens, are the best! I love manny the most - he is the only male of the litter, but cuddles and snuggles the most.

We welcome you both to this forum. You will have to join us in chat rooms sometime as well. I have 18 cats. My oldest is Patch of Beauty Onyxcita the Wimp (Onyx), she is 17 and my youngest are 6 one year olds...2 groups of 3 siblings. I also have a border collie/chow mix dog and a hamster. I have one cat, my 14 year old calico, that has to have a pet hamster. She has had one since she was a kitten and she expects there to always be one in the cage. So there is. You can view pictures of my pets, well most (the 6 youngest are not in there yet) of them by going to the picture gallery, go to search and type in PHWildCat. Here is a picture of my oldest, the Queen of the house

Please don't torture yourself over the little one. You tried to give her every chance and it just was not meant to be. Sometimes it happens. But you saved her Mom and her siblings and you gave them all love and safety when they needed it the most. As for the little one, she knew she was loved in her short life by her furry and human family and what more could she want. Remember, hind site is always 20/20 vision.
