My friend needs help with her mommy kitty!

KittyBaby_04 Oct 26, 2004 09:57 AM

since last night the cat has been taking 2-3 kittens out of the box and just leaving them on the floor over by the flush, and she will feed the ones in the box, She has done this 3 times already but my friend put them back in the box, if she does it again should my friend just start feeding them herself?

I'd say she should start bottle feeding the removed kittens as soon as possible incase she isn't nursing them at all. Is she a first time mom? How many kittens are in the litter? Does she always take out the same ones or is it just a random 3 out of the bunch? She may be overwhelmed and not know what to do with all those kittens crawling on her! Small kittens fade VERY fast so she should probably bottle feed everyone at least a little to be sure they're all getting enough to sustain them. If she is a first time mom it may take her some time to get the hang of it. The most important thing is that everyone is nourished whether it be by mom or a bottle!

Is she nursing the kittens? Are they gaining weight? An experienced Mother has a reason for this behavior. Is the box clean? Does she want them all over there for some reason. Your friend might try a larger box or try moving the whole box and see if that helps or put Mom and the babies in a crate with the door closed and see if she tends them all or shoves 3 away. But she does need to make sure that Mom is feeding all the kits. If they were the same 3 every time, I would say there may be something wrong with the kits but since they are random, she is doing it for some reason.
