2 month old kitten won't eat

aldoboy Dec 01, 2004 09:58 PM

I recently adopted a new kitten from the local animal shelter. She was still drinking her mother's milk, but she is already 2 months old. We took her home and she got along fine, playing and running around our apartment. The thing is, she hasn't eaten for these 2 days we've had her. We have tried feeding her kitten formula milk, can food for kittens, and even solid food (Purina brand). She just smells the food then tries to cover it up as she would in a litter box. She has, though, been drinking water. Is there something that could be wrong with her, or can anyone offer any helpful suggestions? Thanks, I greatly appreciate any advice.

It sounds like she was taken away from her mother to young. I would call the shelter and ask their advice. Also call your vet. A kitten that young not eating isn't a good sign. They can get extremely sick. Not eating for more then 24 hrs is not good!

I would say take him to the vet asap. Kittens not eating can become a very serious problem very quickly. Kola stopped eating several times and the vet had me syringe feed her a mix of a/d prescription food and KMR. You can also try giving him some Nutrical. A 2 month old will need less than a teaspoon a day, if he doesn't like it (which most kitties do) you can smear it down his arm to make him lick it off. This stuff has lots of calories and nutrients to keep them going when they're not eating as they should be. Have you tried heating up the canned food or the KMR? Sometimes heat releases the smell of the food which makes it more appealing to them. Good Luck, this is one of the most frustrating things that can happen to a baby!

I agree with the others, you need to take her to your Vet and call the shelter. Ask if she was eating there and if so, what were they feeding her. If she wasn't eating and was only nursing then to her that stuff is not food and you don't lap food up but you suck it. In that case, put the KMR in a bottle and try it that way and you may have to put some canned food on your finger and put some on her mouth so she gets a taste and hopefully likes it. Let us know.

I agree with Wildcat, you will need to bottle feed her or try and get her to at least taste the wet food. Most kittens love real food (not milk) once they get to taste it. "Finally, meat!"
Good luck, please give an update!
