Where did you get your first Kitten?

PHWildCat Feb 14, 2005 06:36 PM

Ok people. Board has been just a little too quiet and your hostie needs a little more excitement so:::where did you get your very first kitten (not the family cat you had as a child) but the very first one of your very own that you chose all by yourself or with your spouse. I will go first since this was my bright idea. My first kitten was Misty, a grey tabby and white kitten with green eyes and the greatest purr. Oh, we had cats when I was a kid (only so my parents would not have to get us a puppy) but they were outdoor and didn't live very long. I just thought cats died real young...hey..I was a kid. My hubby and I had dogs, he bred them. No cats, he was allergic. But I had to move about 1 hr away to go to college to further my education. My german shephard, well, he lasted about a week in the apartment before he decided that the maintanence man might be edible so he had to go home. I missed my kids, my spouse and my dog. Spouse suggested a cat. So off I went, now if you know very little where do you go to get a cat? A pet store so I went there and there was this adorable little kitten and when I picked her up she put her paws around my neck and purred and that was it, she was on sale for 19.00. Best bargain of my life. She wrapped me around her paw and here we are 20 some years later with 18 cats, 1 dog and even a hamster who belongs to one of the cats as a pet. Ok, your turn! Tell us about your first kitten!!!!!

My nervous sweetie pie Macaroni was my first cat on my own. I moved out of my parent's house and to RI in July of 2001. My mom paid my rent and said no cats under any conditions, because I've always been one to get animals without permission....but my landlord didn't care and even though Mike said no I wanted a kitten for my 19th birthday (my birthday is August but I got her in early September). I went to a semi-local shelter and was so upset at how Mac and her family were being kept. They were in a wire cage that her mom could barely stand up in, outside, very close to the dog kennels. They went inside at night but they looked so sad. There was an orange tiger male and female and a cream tabby male and female. Mackie, the female cream tabby, was the one that looked the least sick and had the sweetest eyes. I couldn't take her home that day so they held her overnight for me (during that time they drew on her head with a highlighter to be able to tell her from the non-adopted ones) and I went back to get her the next day. I got there and the animal control agent was no where to be found, so I waited for 1 1/2 hours until she came back from chasing a pig...no joke! I was a naive cat owner and didn't get her a carrier in advance, so I held her in my one hand(had to steer and shift!) and she clawed me the whole 15 min. home! I got her home and she was just bounding around the bedroom, and then Mike walked in! She ran right out from under the bed, skidded into his leg and ran right back under the bed! It surprised him and he didn't really want a cat (so he thought) so I told him that they were going to put her to sleep if I didn't take her, which made him feel very special and allowed me to keep Macaroni! I told him about 6 months ago that she was never going to be put down and he just laughed, sayin it was a good lie and he was glad I told it so we could keep Roo! Good times....

My first cat on my own not living at home was Crash. In September of 1998 I moved to WA state with my then fiance. We had our own little house/cabin. We decided we wanted to get a dog. So we went to the shelter and put our name in for a husky. They didn't have any at the time. Of course a week later a Saturday before my birthday we went grocery shopping and outside the store there was a box full of puppies. We decide to get one. I picked out the one I liked, then sent the ex out to see which one he liked. While I continued shopping. We both liked Mya so we took her flea ridden body home.
The shelter called about a week later with a husky mix. Of course I had to go see the mix. I didn't tell the ex. I just went to look with a friend. Well while I was looking there I decided hey I can just look at the cats. Well they had kittens running around the small cat room. I feel in love with the one that kept crashing into the walls. Of course I went home and told my ex. He went and saw her and we adopted Crash for his birthday. Mya was mine, Crash was his. Then in January we couldn't take Mya's constant playing so we adopted Mazzy the malamute. Well I ended up being hooked at the shelter I started working there as a volunteer. Of course in Feb Harley came in and I had to bring her home she looked just like Crash but with a hooked tail. We ended up having to move to a bigger house. By the time I moved back to Maine we had three dogs and five cats and 4 feral kittens outside. My ex as far as I know still has Mazzy the malamute, Nash the shepard mix, and Harley the cat. The other cats I have no idea what happened to them.

My first cat ever was Samantha. She was given to me by my daughter, Pam and grandson, David, at a time when I was going through yet another divorce and was very lonely and depressed. They thought that a kitten would cheer me up and they were right! She was only 6 weeks old and they got her from a 'free to good home' ad in the paper. Pam's favorite color is orange (heehee) and she said that she figured that I'd prefer a female, so she called all of the ads in the paper and asked them if they had an orange female. And she found one, Sammi! Then she called me at work and told me to stop by her apartment on my way home because they had a surprise for me. When I got there, Pam and David presented me with a skinny little flea ridden kitten who was much too young to be taken from her mother, but I didn't know that at the time. I didn't know what I was going to do with a new little kitten in my life but as it turned out, she was the best thing that Pam and David could have done for me. I think that it was somehow predestined that I got her, like she was born especially for me to help me start a new chapter in my life. I learned so much from Sammi and we have really bonded to each other. In trying to learn how to care for cats and do the best for her, I took the focus off of my self pity and focused instead on Sammi.

So that's how I got my first cat and how it changed my life.

Well, my first ever cat was a 5-month-old kitten I found at a gas station about 25 years ago. I had taken my car to be winterized and when I went to pick it up a tiny ball of gray fur was sitting by the car in the snow, meowing pitifully. I picked him up and took him inside the garage asking if he belonged to anyone or if anyone wanted him. All the men said he'd been hanging around a couple of days. No, none of them could take him. So I took him home. (BTW, I thought I was strictly a dog person at the time.) I decided that if he got along with my dog, I'd keep him; otherwise I'd find him a home.
Well, the minute I got him home and put him down, my dog ran over to him and started licking him. The kitten allowed that and began purring. They were instantly best friends.
That was Pierre, who lived to be 16 1/2 years old. Pierre gets the credit for turning me into the cat lady I am now.

Lovely Stories of First kittens everyone , and gorgeous pictures too .

I've told my First kitten story before , but love talking about her , so here goes again .

Apart from cats when growing up , my first Kitten was given to me in 1989 by my then girlfriend, now wife ,Sarah.
I lived alone in a one room bedsit . Well , I say alone but I had a room full of snakes and lizards , but they don't really give much affection LOL!
Sarah turned up one Spring morning and said she had a surprise for me , then she placed the most adorable little tabby and white kitten on my bed saying, "I don't want you to be lonely when i'm not here".
I was a bit shocked to tell the truth, and wasn't quite sure if I wanted a cat at that stage . But those doubts vanished within less than a day when that night I woke up to find her curled around the top of my head , i just felt kinda... safe.I smiled and drifted back to sleep.
Within day's little munchie had become my everything , and as she grew the welcome i got when coming home was just wonderfull ... She had a very high pitched fast puuuurrr, and would go like mad as I placed her against my cheek upon coming home.
I'd also spend many hours playing our , 'Fetch the ball of foil' game . I'd throw a rolled up piece of foil out the window and she'd run out , down the tiles , onto the fence , then all the way back with it .

Anyway, this story has a sad ending as, Munchie lived less than a year. One morning I woke up and just Knew she was gone , I couldn't 'Feel' her . The Sky was dark grey , and rain poured down against my window . I looked at her bowl and saw the food was untouched ... I knew she was dead.
I got up and went out of the house , soon I found her dead by the road ... (This is bringing it all back , and I feel like Crying now).

She was soooo special.

A few months afterwards I knew I had to get another cat , so Sarah and i spent weeks looking around but none seemed right . That was untill we found ,'Rover' :¬)X . She was the runt of a litter of nine , and as we viewed the kittens she just sat with me purring .
I never let Rover out of the bedsit , because I couldn't stand loosing her to the road , and I knew I was moving in with Sarah soon , and Sarah lived in a much more cat friendly area.

But one more thing . When I left the bedsit and moved in with Sarah I couldn't settle , the reason why soon became clear. I could not leave munchie back there buried in the garden , I had to have her close. So I returned to the bedsit and Dug her up (I'd made her a wooden Coffin), Then re-buried her deep at Sarah's house ... instantly everything felt right and I settled.

I will post pictures of munchie tomorrow . I will have to scan them in as they are old film pictures .

Hope you all enjoyed my story of Munchie
Alan

What a great idea for a topic! Justin and I got our first kitten while we were dating, he did it for me out of pity I think because I wanted a kitten so badly but my mom wouldn't let me keep one at her house. So we went to the pound and there were a pair of brother and sister kittens there. We took forever trying to decide which one to take (gosh I wanted to take both of them but we couldn't!) and finally decided on the girl. Being that beautiful charcoal grey that alot of DSH cats have, we named her Cinder. She became a spoiled princess from day one (even sleeping in my neice's old bassinet) and still has an attitude to this day, but we love her to pieces.
Here is a pic of Cinder when I started keeping mice as pets:

She is very pretty and seems real interested in the mouse too Thanks for sharing.

Justin and I got our first kitten when we were dating. I wanted a new kitten really badly, as all my childhood kitties were aging or dead..especially my favorite one who died when he was 17. So we went to the pound and found Cinder. She was there with her brother who we didn't take home because Justin only had a one room apartment. Since they were the only kittens to be had at that time of year, I'm sure he found a good home.
Anyway, Cinder was, and continues to be our princess. She is still miffed that we had the gall to get 3 other cats..Toby, Ella and Misty. The woman we had boarded her with until recently says that Cinder has an "attitude". Lol. But we love her to peices!
