little indoor kitten, older outdoor hunter

I've had my female kitten butter nutt for 5 weeks now and she's 11 weeks old. She just had her last round of shots this morning and is in great health. I would like to take her with me to visit my parents 2.5 hours away this weekend. They have two very peaceful dogs (Keeshounds- 7years and 11years) and a black male outdoor/indoor cat with a reputation for hunting (lots of birds and the occasional mouse). My parents cat gets along with other cats in the neighborhood, and is best friends with the neighbor's cat. Butternut weighs about 2 pounds, and always stays inside. I don't plan on letting them out of my sight without a closed door between them. Is it unreasonable to think there is a chance they could get along?

I don't see how it would hurt to try as long as you stay with the baby and have a back up plan in case it doesn't go well. Like confining the baby to the room that you sleep in. I would not shut the adult out of his own house or confine him in his own house. That isn't fair to him. But it would be good to socialize her with dogs and cats if you can keep an eye on them and confine her when you are not able too.

Thanks for your reply. That's exactly what I did, and Butternut was happy to stay in my room, and visit with the dogs while my parents cat was outside. I decided not to even test my baby with the older cat, as he'd put on a lot of weight, and I realized she would be no match for him. Thanks again!

I think they might get along...you'll just have to see what happens. Every cat is different! He might be territorial, or he might just be curious. Let us know what happens!
