Kitten questions

wildside27 Jun 02, 2005 11:54 AM

Hello to everyone,

I found a kitten recently (Sunday)on the side of my house. I took her on to care for her after I realized the mother was not coming back for her. She is crawling around so she must be at least a few weeks old. I am still feeding her the colostal. What else should I be feeding her????

When baby kittens deficate should it be solid stool or loose?

Any and all help would be much appreciated.

Thank You in advance,

Andrew

Hi Andrew,
I am glad you found our site. Thank you so much for rescuing this baby.
I was wondering if the kitten's eyes are open yet. If they are fully open then the kitten is probably between a week and two weeks old. She should start walking at about two to three weeks of age.
You should be feeding a milk replacer. Most people use KMR. Make sure you sterilize the bottle between feedings.
Here are feeding guide line:
One week old the kitten should eat 32 cc per serving and you should feed at least 6 times a day if not more.
At age two weeks feed 56 cc per serving and you should try and feed at least four times a day more if you can. Three weeks 80 cc per serving and try to feed at least three times per day.
You need to help the kitten go the bathroom. To stimulate bowel movement gently rub the kitten's abdomen and bottom with a cotton ball or pad or tissues moistened with warm water. Don't rub too much you only want to have kitten expel waste.
If she is going on her own she may be a little older then you think.
Good luck. Keep us posted.

Andrew, thanks for rescuing this little kitten! I'm not sure how old she is but think that you should go to a petstore, like PetCo or PetSmart to get the necessary things to feed her, like KMR and a bottle. When my Samantha's kittens were 6 week old, I started feeding them a watered down high quality kitten food to help supplement their diet.

I think that their elimination should be solid but really can't remember.

Here's a link that will give you lots of useful info on Abandoned Kittens.

Hope this helps and good luck to you!
