pregnant kitty question

bonkelsmeeks Jun 06, 2005 01:38 PM

We took in this friendly little stray, had her tested and all that. It turns out she's pregnant! I have been through this once before so I am pretty confidant I know what to do but how can I tell how far along she is? I think she is pretty far into it because she is rounder (but not huge), more vocal and needy than she had been and her nipples and sticking out and very pink. We brought her in about a month ago, the funny thing is the vet didn't say she was pregnant, we were going to bring her back to have her spayed when we started to notice the signs. I can feel distinct bumps in her belly and I can see them move too and I read that the kittens wouldn't be that pronounced until she was very close. Anyone know what other signs I should look for to figure out if she's going to give birth any time soon? Thanks.

She may start looking for a nice quiet dark spot and nesting in there a little, she will also start cleaning her private parts frequently and may have a little discharge. Bless you for taking her in, loving her and preparing for her babies. Let us know how she is doing.

Well, my last question got an answer this afternoon. She had a kitten at around 3pm today, but only one. She definitely has at least one other kitten, as I can feel it. She is still cleaning her genitals constantly and she does still have a little discharge. How long is normal between kittens? I have been through this before (a while ago) but that cat had four in four hours so it went pretty quickly. I called the vet after it had been 2 hours since the first baby. She said not to worry until tomorrow and to call back if she hasn't had the other(s) by tomorrow. But I am worrying a little. The mama and baby both seem to be fine. The kitten is clean and nursing every 2 hours or so and the mama is purring and more affectionate than she has been since we first brought her in, so as long as no one's in pain I guess I shouldn't worry. But she isn't having contractions at all or anything. Anyone have any experience similar to this one? Thanks again. P.S. Know anyone who wants a kitten? lol

It's Thursday. What is happening with the mama cat?
Congratulations on the one baby she had on Thursday. I want a kitten but I am not allowed to have any more.
What does the kitten look like (colors)?

Well I took mama to the vet and it turns out she only had one kitten. What I was feeling inside her was (ready for this) poop. Her colon was all filled up and she must not have been able to go right away. The vet said it is not so strange for the body to go a little haywire after giving birth especially in such a young mother (she is only about 10 months). She has since pooped and is looking better!
But on a sad note, the kitten that she had did not make it. I don't know what happened, everything seemed to be going well. Kitten was nursing and seemed normal, but when I came home from work today I found mama had moved the kitten out of the nice warm box and behind the computer. When I moved the computer it was easy to see the poor thing wasn't moving. My guess from the fact that the baby had gook coming out of its mouth is that mama was not stimulating elimination as often as she should have. Mama is doing ok though, she still looks for the baby but is still purring, eating and playing like normal. I also unfortunately have to find a new home for the mama. We would love to keep her but she and our other cats do not get along at all. Surprisingly she tolerates the dog just fine. So she is living in a separate room away from the others and is not receiving all of the attention she really deserves. She would be much happier as an only pet I think.
Thanks again for all of your replies.

Sorry about the baby. She may mellow a bit with the other cats after she stops looking for her baby and forgets that little event, but good luck finding her a perfect forever home. Such a young Mommy, she just wasn't mature enough to know what to do with the baby. Glad she is ok though.
