cord chewing kitten

jadzia Sep 08, 2005 03:25 PM

Hey there.
Just a little problem. Zephy has taken to chewing electrical cords.I unplug what I can and try to keep the others out of his way. I have also tried some bitter-yuck, but no matter how many times I soak those cords he comes back for more.
Any ideas or products that would keep him from his chewing?

Oh my, you are going to have your hands full with this little one Bitter Apple works for most cats but not all. I had one that actually seemed to like it. She finally grew out of the chewing phase without electricuting herself. Did you look at the pet store to see what else they had? You also might call the Vets office and see if they have any suggestions for you.

Oh this isn't good. We had a member recently that had a kitten chew a cord and was serverly burned. Maybe for now until you figure out how to stop her from chewing, unplug everything. I know it is a pain but it's better then spending 1000 of dollars on a vet bill, and having a hurt furbaby.

Well, I did figure out a temporary solution. Everything that couldn't be unplugged I duct tapped to the carpet. The loops to the outlets that come out from the wall I put it sticky side out. He no longer seems interested.
Still have to watch all those things that get temporarily plugged in, but hey.

I have the same problem with an adult cat. She will chew on any hanging wire or cord---but not if it's laying flat on the floor. Does anybody have any suggestions? Is there anything stronger than Bitter Apple or Fooey or anything you get in the pet store? Maybe I should wrap the cords in double sided tape? Anything else?

Oh my that is a problem. I have had kittens who chewed but mine all grew out of it and all but one hated Bitter Apple. I would certainly try the double sided tape and I might even be tempted to check with the Vet and try some tabasco sauce. Bet she would not like that much. It certainly worked on my dog who decided that cat turds were a dietary suppliment when she was a pup. A little tabasco sauce in a turd and that was the end of that!!!!
