6 month old kitten depressed?

srises Nov 14, 2005 12:08 PM

I adopted a kitten from my local animal shelter when he was 3 months old (Now 6 months old). Early on he acted like a typical kitten, very active and energetic, ate well and was very playful. He had developed a bacterial infection from living outside before being left in front of the shelter. I had him treated by the local vet, antibiotics and eye medicine. During the treatment he started to sleep alot and did not seem as active, although he seemed to still be eating regularly. I attributed that to the medicine. But since the treatment is over, he now sleeps most of the time, not getting up to play, barely checking his food bowl, and seems extremely lethargic. He uses the litter box normally, and does not seem to be outwardly ill, good coat, etc. My husband and I work long hours, therefore he is alone (no other pets at home) all day. I am taking him back to the vet tonight, hope to avoid alot of expensive tests. I treated him with a commercial wormer and he has not been fixed yet. Any thoughts?

It certainly sounds like something is wrong with the kitten. In my experience a lonely kitten is more inclined to get into everything and knock stuff everywhere while he is alone. It would seem if he was lonely and bored he would play and be a pest when you were at home. I would not even consider getting him a friend until you know that the kitten is well.

I agree with PHWild. You should take the kitten back to the vet to see what is wrong with him.

An update on my "depressed" kitten, another vet diagnosed the kitten to have FIP/Feline Infectious Peritontas. I had never heard of this before, but after reading up on it and the vets information, I understand there is no cure. It seems the kitten was sick before I adopted him from the shelter. The shelter has been informed, and now I have to have him euthanized. Luckily, I did not have any other pets at home...
