CONCERNS.....

SOUTHERN FLORIDA CORUCIA RESEARCH CENTER (SFCRC)

Location: LEE/1.

Hello All,

With the current influx of Corucia and the proposed Bush amendment, I wanted to share some thoughts ( It's hard to type as I have a sleeping Skunk in my lap with his head resting on one arm).

Yes, It's me. The guy who posted getting Corucia out in anyway since they face no future in the wild. I still embrace this -only since the Solomon Ecosystem is on the verge of extinction. However, I'm am cognizant of the fact that such procedures have it's dire pathways. The stress and mortality in transit, care or better put lack there-of in their ultimate destination (Being a novality to be soon deglected etc.) and... conditions in the Reptile warehouse or Pet Shop. I say this because I witnessed last night, a pet shop where Corucia were kept in a fish Aquarium with no room to climb. They were being fed crickets and a dish with frosting and imbedded dead crickets. My analysis was they were trying to fatten them up for quick sale with sugar in their thinking. Even if it contained a medicated mixture, I know these guys as well as what my daughters will eat or not eat. They will not touch this on their own. Naturally the individuals were stressed. A thin indivivdual I estimate was 4 years of age, rushed up to me when I opened the enclosure as if to say..PLEASE get me the hell out of here or it terms of the MATRIX -I need an exit. Who knows what other horrors face Corucia worldwide in improper hands.

This is just one of the reasons we Corucians must work together to create better regulation for this wonderful species.

Thanks for listening.

Sincerely,
Brian

Brian,

I have gone through the same mixed feelings many times and go will probably go through them again. My daughter, 17, gave me a little lecture about how 70% of imported animals die during transit, and I probably gave her the stats on that. She told me this when I told her about my new trio of skinks. I want to tell her about the conditions on the Solomon Islands, which I don't have that much information on. Could you e-mail me this or tell me where to find it? I sort of knew it wasn't good and also just knew it would be hard to get them in the future. But I just told her that in general some species may become extinct if it isn't for people captive breeding. I think she's going through a phase where she questions the value of life in a cage at all, and I know where she's coming from but I'm not there. I have been there, but I know I can give my animals a decent life and that it's important for these calm funny looking lizards that actually protect their babies to keep existing!

I'd also like to know what your Corucia Research center is. Thanks. -Lucy

Hi Lucy,

In regards to your first question, Check sources on the subject through one of the search engines. I also recommend reading the South Pacific News.

As to question 2... To answer it properly, would be somewhat lengthy but it has been some time since this subject came up.
As soon as I have the proper time to post it, I will give you a detailed answer to this question.

Sincerely,
Brian
