More Kitten Questions...

c&f Mar 23, 2006 07:59 PM

Hello All!

Thanks so much for all the advice so far! That is a great pic of Lizzie, what a cutie!!!!

My husband and I moved the kittens this evening. He made a nice box for them, and we put in layers of newspaper and towels, with blankets for bunpers. Munchie seems happy with the nice, clean setup.

So, I have a couple more questions...

1. What temp should the kittens area be? I've found conflicting information all over the web. The room is in the mid-high 70's, but the area Munchie picked isn't as warm as it's in a corner. We have a thermometer in the area and should have an accurate temp reading in a bit. Munchie does cuddle her babies all day/night, but I want to make sure they are warm enough.

2. I *think* I heard one of the kitty's sneeze tonight, and I saw a small drop of moisture under her nostril. I haven't seen/heard any of them sneeze other than that. Now I am worried. I will, of course, keep an eye on her, but I am worried. Should I keep picking her up and checking her nose? Her eyes aren't open yet, ut I didn't see any crusts. Are there any signs of sickness that I should be looking for?

Thank you so much for all your help! I am a reptile person, schooled in lizards and turtles and tortoises and snakes. Cats are new to me!

Thank You!
Christine

Thanks for the compliment about Lizzie. That was a picture of her last day outside before I trapped her and now she lives in here as a house pet. 70 degrees should be fine. Cats have their babies outside all the time and since they have them in March April and May as a rule, it can get quite cold at night and the kits do fine. I would not worry about the temp at all. As for the sneeze, keep an eye on her but I would not worry about 1 sneeze. She might have gotten a bit of fur in her nose or some dust or even a bit of towel. If her nose is runny or she starts sneezing frequently or acts lethargic and unwilling to nurse get her to the Vet quickly. If Mommy doesn't mind you picking up the kits, by all means pick them up. You want them to be well socialized. If she acts anxious about it, cut back on the attention to them. Sounds to me like you are doing great with your first cat experience. Oh and we like pictures too Especially of babies. Here is a picture of Wicca and her kits before I brought her in as a pet too. She had them on my porch and she and another cat job shared in raising 2 litters together

I forgot to say, in this picture Wicca has all the kittens and those kittens are now 2 years old almost. She loved being a mother and usually had both her and Cali's kittens. Her sister really had to beg to get to be with her own kittens. She would sometimes reach in the box and nab one kitten so she could nurse one. Didn't matter to her which kitten. But they did take turns with them and sometimes both Moms would be in the box with all the kits.
