Help! New Kitten and Box Training Prob

greentara Apr 17, 2006 11:43 AM

Hi All, We have a new 9 week old male kitten named Nico, who is an absolute doll, except for one thing.... he will not pee in his litter box. He poops in it and hasn't missed once but peeing is another story. He has gotten a clean bill of health from the Vet{no UTIs} We have 2 different boxes for him, have experimented with different litters, have soaked up urine from accidents and placed paper towel in box and put him in there pretty consistantly but he's only used it once. He does seem to like going on cloth things, pillows, blankets etc. We've had several kittens in our life time but have been lucky to have never had an issue with this before. We have been keeping him in one room when we leave the house and just realized he's using the plants in there

We do have 2 other adult cats, one male one female both spayed and neutered who have adjusted to him well. He seems to like them too and has showed no fear. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated as I've run out of ideas. Thanks so much, tara

PS Only other thing I can think of to mention was that although he was eating solid food when we got him, his previous owner did say that he was still nursing when she gave him to us{ at 8 weeks). I'm wondering if he just went when he was sleeping with mom cat and hasn't learned otherwise?

Well, he is pretty young and you have only had him a week. It is possible that Mom had not finished training him yet. Where did Mom go to the bathroom? And what litter did she use? You need to keep taking him to the litter box several times a day. Especially right after he eats and when he wakes up. If you can put him in a room that doesn't have plants or dirt or anything else that he might consider a nice place for a kitten to go. I use a small bathroom. Give him some toys a box with a towel to sleep in and a litter box. And of course food and water. Hopefully others will have more suggestions for you.

How are you cleaning the area he has used to go as a litter box?
I know you said it was blankets/pillows ect. He may still smell the urine smell on them; if he does he is going to continue to go there.
I would try and confine him to a bathroom (like Wildcat suggested).
Only let him out when you can supervise him.
