5 m.o .Kitten Not Eating

Siamesekitty07 May 27, 2007 12:46 PM

My husband and I brought home a 5 month old siamese kitten Thursday night. She has not ate since we brought her home. She has however, drank a little water. She has voided, but not had a bowel movement. Also she has a lot of gas. I understand that she has been going through quite a bit of separation anxiety-she hides from us all day. Is there anything we can do to spark her appetite or should we just call it a day and take her to the vet?

Hi There,

A cat that stops eating is in danger of developing a condition known as fatty liver disease in as little as 2 - 3 days. This is very, very serious when it does occur.

Please go out immediately and get some strained meat baby food (with no onion added) for your kitten. This should get her interested in eating, but if it doesn't work, I recommend that you take her to an ER ASAP.

You can also try things like tuna (human or feline version), chicken, and cottage cheese to try and get her to eat. At this point, anything is better than nothing. There is also the possibility of dehydration since she isn't drinking much and kittens can go downhill very rapidly.

Please keep us updated.

Well, I took my kitten to the ER tonight. It turns out she had a broken tooth with an oral infection. The doctor said it was probably too painful for her to eat. I guess she wasn't just homesick.

Hi,

Poor baby! I'm so glad you took her in. Have you tried offering her some baby food yet? She might still be able to lap easily.

Thanks for the update and I hope your kitten feels better very soon!

PHKitkat

Glad that your kitten's problem was found. Bless her little heart. A new home and Mommy and Daddy and a sore mouth too. No wonder she was hiding and not eating. Hopefully she will feel better soon and eat, drink and get to know her new parents.
