Almost 4-week old Kitten Abandoned

BlackHeartNY Jun 09, 2007 08:06 PM

By Mom. She doesn't really take much interest in this kitten, and basically walks away from her. She IS the runt of the litter! So - I've taken her in. I need to know from you knowledgeable folks out there what I need to be feeding her, and how often. So far, I've been giving her baby pablum mixed with water. She eats it, but I know that's not what I should be feeding her. Please help, and thanks for all the replies!!

If the kitten is three weeks old, chances are she still needs to drink milk. You can buy kitten formula and a baby bottle in any Pet store. I have even seen it at Walmart. They sell it in powdered or liquid form. Brands are KMR, just born, etc. DO NOT offer cow's milk or infant formula, you may make her sick and it doesn't really have the nutrition a kitten needs.

When the kitten gets closer to 4 weeks old, you can start offering KITTEN canned food mixed with formula to a soft paste. Try and offer it with your finger to the kitten's mouth. After a few days, you can switch to only kitten food. Kitten chow can also be offered at this stage, since the teeth will start coming out.

Also, by 4 weeks you can start offering a litter box (a low level to the ground with regular, non-clumping litter works fine). Most babies will take to the litterbox very easily.

Good luck with the baby. And don't worry, it can be done (I raised Bobo the brat like that). There's plenty of knowledgeable people in this site and you can post in the boards or attend the chats that are offered every night.

I am also including a link on how to raise baby kits.

Good luck with the kit and let us know how she is doing. Thanks for trying with this little baby.

Thank you for the site! A lot of information. Well, this little kit seems to be doing quite well, except for a bit of CONSTIPATION. When I sit her in the cat box, she moves around and meows lots, then takes her stance for a poop. She quiets down, but when she does poop, it's a tiny bit and seems a bit hard to me.

What can I do for her (additives to food/pablum, etc.) to help her have a smooooth poop!?

Again, thanks for all the help!

Kittens do move around and mew alot when they are going poop. I am not sure why but they do. One of mine sounded like a air raid signal when she went. Scared me to death the first time she did it. Glad that she is doing well. A picture of her would be nice and what is her name????

Not sure what I want to name her yet. I'm thinking maybe "Cinnamon." She's a cream-colored girl with blue eyes, and brownish-grey tipped ears, tail and paws. Her muzzle is a slight golden color. She's a beauty. If I can get a pic of her, I will gladly post it if somebody could tell me how.

She sure meows alot!

Last year, I gave to my Mom a kitty that looked a lot like her. His name is "Siam" and he looks very much like a "Birman."

Once you get the picture on your puter go to the top of any page of this site where all the sites are listed. You will find one called Photo Gallery, click on that. Register using the same name and password that you use everywhere else. Then pick a catagory for your picture to go in. When the new screen comes up just fill in the blanks and for the picture click on browse. Find the picture on your puter that you want to post, and select it and then click on upload (I think) at the bottom of the page. It may take a bit to load it. Then when you go to post it, write your note as usual and before you click on post message look under "photos" at the bottom of your page and it should be there. Click on it and that is it.

I had my hubby take a pic of "Cinnamon," and e-mail it to me. However, the darn pics aren't coming in for some strange reason. It's weirdness using a cell phone because sometimes I get them, sometimes I don't. I will try to get another pic of her if I can and hope it works so I can post it!

I'm very excited! She's doing much better since I fed her a bit of Mineral Oil. Hope to get a pic posted soon! Thanks for all the replies!
