New kitten hiding

Emiwenis Jul 28, 2007 10:16 PM

Hi i adopted a kitten yesterday, a little black and white boy with a hitler moustache, up to date on his 1st round of shots, and 9 weeks old.

this is only the 2nd night, just fyi.

first night we brought him in the apartment and he hid behind the couch, then under my bed, til we crawled under and got him so we could put him in a "safe room" that was not carpeted, with his litter box and food and water.
He would not use his litter today, until i bought him a new/different brand of litter, then he immediately went when i left the room. He tries to run out the doors when we come to check on him. He deifnitely wants to escape his room.

he mewed all through the night last night.
today he mews for about 5 to 10 minutes after we are in the room with him and then leave and shut the door.

He hides behind the toilet and it takes a lot of coercing to get him to come out and eat or play even though he will eat from my fingers, gladly rambunciously play with his toys, and sit in our laps and knead us when we pet him.

he will not sleep in his kitty bed, only behind the toilet, hiding.

any suggestions? just time? should i let him out into the rest of the house even though he still wants to hide? i'm glad he finally figured out his litter and is eating canned mixed with hard food.

This is pretty normal behavior for a new kitten. Think about it from his point of view....Mommy and siblings have mysteriously disappeared and he is in a strange place with strange people and in his eyes no one to protect him. So when no one is there, he does what Mommy taught him.....hide. I would start letting him out some when you are there but put him back if he is alone. Are there other pets in the house? Let him hide if he wants to, being under the bed or under the couch is ok. He will come out on his own if there is something fun to do and soon he will be more comfortable and will not want to miss anything and will stay out. Just give him some time to adjust. He sounds very cute and we love picturesHint, hint!!!

Haha...
here are some pictures of Neville in my lap.
he won't stop meowing when we stop playing with him, then instead of sleeping in his softy kitty bed he goes and sleeps hiding behind the toilet, which is next to his litter tray.
i'm not sure when i should let him out into the rest of the apartment, i dont want him hiding under my trundle bed and getting smooshed!

Oh he is adorable. There is a site called catsthatlooklikehitler.com. You should put his picture there. There is no accounting for where cats choose to sleep. I have soft furniture and some of mine prefer to sleep on dressers, counters and one on the copy/fax machine and then she gets an attitude if something comes through on it. Here is a link to the above site. Lots of cute cats there

Awww, what a little cutie!

My two new kittens are black/white, white/black. Chloe has white under her nose! Clark is the white/black. They are about 6 weeks here.

Did you consider getting 2 kittens? They are a bundle of fun.
