I give up

TerryB Aug 22, 2005 09:25 AM

Liat is just too smart for me. I booby-trapped the LP's with duct tape, sticky side out. She was kept in another room so she couldn't see the trap going up. Since then, she hasn't even offered to scratch at that spot. She seems to know there is something going on thatshe won't like, so she just avoids it. I'm sure that when I remove the tape, the scratching will resume. It has happened before with traps. The trap goes up, the behavior changes. The trap comes down, right back to the old habits. I like to think I am a reasonably intelligent adult, but this cat has got me beat.

I do get a little revenge Friday, a trip to the vet for the annual checkup and shots. Of course, I will be on the dirt list for a day or two (she doesn't like the carrier).

Still, the fun outweighs the aggravation. Yesterday was dancing day for some reason. I thought I would bust a gut laughing at her.

She IS a smartie!! Maybe if you leave the trap in place long enough she'll forget how much fun it was.

Wish I could figure out how to get Eddie out of his paper-gnawing phase. I work from home and can't tell you how much perfectly good paper he's ruined. He sits next to the printer and chews on that. He sits by the stacking files and gnaws on the edges of anything that he can. He even tries to chew on the edges of the newspaper when I'm reading it! (I have to keep checks from clients in my desk drawer until I get to the bank -- heaven forbid he gnawed on one of them!)

Maybe he's lacking something in his diet?

Paper chewer, huh? Obviously I don't have an answer for that one, I can't control Liat, much less someone else's furball. If I had to guess, Eddie just needs something to do, apparently Emily isn't keeping him busy enough.

As to leaving the trap, Liat never forgets anything. Memory like an elephant, also sounds like one early in the morning. How can 7 or so pounds of cat sound like it's trying to tear the house down?

I am considering getting Liat a playmate. It will produce one of two results. Either thay would play together and stay out of trouble or, more likely, be twice as hard to control. Still, it would also be twice the fun.

It only took me a few months to decide that one Tonk was one Tonk too few. It took a few days of adjustment for Emily to work through her displeasure (at one point, I let her in the room where I was keeping Eddie while she adjusted and the first thing she did was to very methodically and systematically remove every toy in the room--pointedly glaring at me with each trip). They are now just like two little peas in a pod--where you find one, the other is sure not to be far behind.

And, even though they are way past kittenhood they still have a great time playing tag and tearing around the house after one another. And, rest assured, if one Tonk sounds like an elephanat, two sound like a whole herd of them!

I have never regretted for one minute the decision to add Eddie to the fold.

Keep us posted!!
