Kitten Food?

MSKC Dec 19, 2005 08:08 AM

Hi All,

I'm getting two 12 week old kittens sometime during the first half of January. I've always fed my cats dry food, but I'm wondering if you fed your kittens some wet food as well when they were small. Also, which brands are really nutritious and which are just full of junk? I'd appreciate any input.

Thanks so much!
Ms KC

I would definitely try some wet food also for the first few months at least...I switch between Wiskas tender bites in the pouch and Nutro kitten food in the can...I like the pouches better they are easier to deal with...I do make sure the dry food is high end though...so I can save a little on the store brand wet...

Bentley my oldest had the wet food twice a day until he was about a year old then he decided he just didn't want it anymore...Alastair my 11month old garbage disposal had to be taken off of it at 4 months because it was causing very wet mushy poops and he would step in it and track it all over...but my youngest Finster never had it then developed a partial obstruction caused by a hairball, but he is now supplemented with the wet food to keep his stool mushier...I'm kind of thinking had he been on the wet food from the beginning I may have been able to avoid the drama...

hope this helps...

Whatever you decide to do, be sure to start them out on whatever they are being fed by the breeder. Then, if you want to change over, do it very gradually.

Those tiny little digestive systems are very sensitive!

Firstly, conCATualations on adopting your Tonk babies and welcome to the Tonk board! I hope you have kitten proofed you house against curious little paws. As for what to feed: Personally I feed Purina One kitten formula (it's in a turqouise bag) and Friskies wet food. I feed wet food every day (twice to three times a day) until they are about 8 months of age then I cut the wet food down to a couple times a week or completely out all together. I also gradually change them over to the adult formula of Puria One: Mixing the two formulas together gradually increasing the adult formula until that's all they're eatting, usually. My one 14 month old Turkish Angora girl, Sunburst (who BTW is now a GRAND Champion *preens*) is so highly active I've had to keep her on the kitten food otherwise she doesn't hold her weight. However, before you go out and buy ANY food I would ask the breeder what they are feeding. Any change in diet should be done gradually as a sudden change can lead to upset tummies. Again, conCATulation on your new babies! I look forward to hearing about their antics and seeing more pics of them!

Tricia: Congrats on Sunburst's attaining GC status! You must be so proud of her and she is justified in her "preening".
