How did you discover the Tonkinese breed

2TonksHere Jan 25, 2006 07:31 PM

I always wonder...because most people who meet mine, Bentley and Finster especially automatically assume Siamese...and then when I say Tonkinese...they give me that blank stare...???

I found Tonks by accident...I always loved the color of the Siamese coat and always wanted a cat with Blue eyes...so while researching the breed (and being a little disappointed) I came across the Tonks and immediately knew that was the breed for me...and have since collected all of my favorite colors!!!

How did you hear about/find them?

I also found Tonks pretty much by accident. I love cats and when I was ready to get another kitty after my tortie calico died, I did some research. I was totally taken by the descriptions of the Tonkinese cat. I will always have a Tonk in my life.

GOTTA LOVE THEM TONKS!!

I get the same response from people when I tell them we adopted Tonks.

My pound kitty Gus was my precious baby and so sweet. He was my baby and I was his mommy for sure. When he passed away I felt it would be impossible to pick another perfect cat from the Humane Society. I am sure there are lots of great cats there, but I didn't want to risk getting one who despised me. My co-worker's daughter had a tonk and he related their wonderful "doglike" qualities. I did a lot of research on them and when we were ready for more cats, my husband and I decided we wanted Tonks so we'd have a better chance of great personalities. I am happy with the choice and hope they love us more every day.

Perhaps I'm insecure, but I want my cats to LOVE, LOVE, LOVE me and think I'm wonderful because I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them and think they are wonderful.

My previous cats were what I refer to as "welfare kitties" -- two of the most wonderful, loving creatures anyone could ever imagine and both of whom, essentially, found me. However, I had always loved Siamese cats and their "chatty" personalities.

When my dear little Piewacket went to the bridge I decided it was time. I asked at my vet's office for a breeder recommendation and one of the women who worked there suggested I look at Tonks instead, since they are more like the old fashioned Siamese I remembered in terms of appearance. I'd never heard of the breed but I thought, "Why not check them out?"

As luck would have it, the breeder she recommended to me lived about six miles from my house. I walked in the door and was greeted by several of the most beautiful, outgoing, friendly little cats I had ever seen. It was love at first sight!! Then, she took me into the room where all the kittens were and that was it.

I brought Emily home the day after my first visit (I wanted them all, but reason and my bank account prevailed). Eddie joined us six months later.

Sounds like we all had similiar experiences. When my calico Sassy crossed over, I mentioned to one of my clients who is an animal lover that I had lost my cat. She said she was about to have a litter and did I want one. I asked what kind and was told Tonkinese. Never heard of them, so I started searching the web. Quickly became enthralled with the idea. When the time came, I picked Liat out of a litter of six. The world has been a brighter place ever since.

I too found out how wonderful the Tonk breed is very much by accident. I'd heard about them but didn't think much of them until my dad and step-mom brought a bro/sis solid blue pair home from Tx. The little boy kitten soon made it clear that he'd chosen me as HIS hoomin. I breed one litter: bro-sis... I didn't want to do it but my dad's and sm's co-breeder had say of first breeding and he insisited on it. Unfortunately, I ran into a potential gentic liver/kidney problem and ended the line I was using by spaying and neutering everyone. Now I only have my original neutered stud, Bumbles left, and he just turned *10 years* old in Dec. Seems like yesterday he was just a 6 month old kitten! At the moment I'm concentrating on my Turkish Angora lines (pictures can be found on that breed board) but as soon as I have the time, room, and money you can bet I'll be breeding my beloved Tonks again. They're like potato chips you know: Can't have just one!

Totally by accident. My brother got Ricky the first from a friend who got him from a breeder. The friend turned out to be allergic, so my brother got Ricky. He had Ricky about two years then moved in with a now ex-girlfriend. They moved somewhere where cats were not allowed, so I inherited Ricky. I never had a cat before, but fell in love with Ricky when he was a kitten, so I was thrilled to go from "Aunt" to "mommy." Ricky saw me through a high risk pregnancy, and through Bayla's first year. He was the best companion and as gentle and protective of Bayla as can be. He crossed the bridge several years ago, but he taught me that Tonks are awesome.

I found them by accident, too. I had just lost my baby...and was looking for a cat with a loving, lap-cat, intelligent personality. I came across the Burmese. In my search for breeders, i found Tonkinese online and loved everything i read.

Still, not quite convinced about purchasing a cat, i went to visit a breeder- a first for me. And Rigby jumped into my arm from across the room, and i couldn't leave without him!
