Who's in Charge Here?

CarolEm&Ed Mar 22, 2006 09:32 AM

This morning when Emily and I came downstairs (Eddie generally sleeps in) I got distracted by something I saw on the front page of the newspaper and--rather than immediately put down fresh water and new dry food--started reading the article.

A couple minutes later I glanced up and there was Emily, sitting very quietly and giving me what had to be the angriest glare that she could muster.

Her message came through loud and clear. I immediately set the paper aside and got busy with her breakfast.

It's amazing how much power one tiny little cat can wield!

Was there ever any question? I have never known a cat that wasn't in charge. If I don't top off the water bowl daily, I catch all kinds of you know what.

By the way, how much water does a cat normally drink. Past cats have always shared a bowl with dogs, so I have no idea. Liat seems to drink an awful lot of water for a small cat.

That's really funny...What really amazes me is how they have managed to "train" us so well without ever having to say one word in English. Now that's power!!!!!

I see Emily and Eddie at their water bowls at least a few times a day but it's never registered as being something to be concerned about.
It might be a good idea to just call the vet to touch base if you think she might be drinking more than normal.

Terry, part of how much they drink depends on what kind of food they're eating. Cats that eat mostly dry kibble need a lot more water than those that eat canned. Canned food will normally supply about 70% of a cat's daily need for water. I give Sadie a fresh bowl at least once a day. I'd say the bowl holds 2 to 2 1/2 cups. Normally, it is down by about 1/3. She gets mostly canned food with a small amount of dry to nibble while I am at work... then a bit more at bedtime.

Thanks for the info. Since Liat gets mostly dry food (Purina Indoor Formula) the amount of water sounds normal. Cat novice is still learning, especially who is in charge. She owns the house and allows me to stay.
