Cat Food

mskc Apr 04, 2006 09:32 AM

Hey all,

I am part of a yahoo group on training your cat. Sometimes people get off topic and start going on and on about proper cat nutrition. I believe this is important, but I have to say, I’m pretty happy with my IAMs or Science Diet. Keep in mind, other people have done a lot of research and I have not.

What do you feed your cats? I’ve heard of Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover’s Soul, a raw diet, a prepared meat diet, something that you have to buy in individual packages and is all natural, etc.

Please give me your politically incorrect answer – if you feed your cats the cheapest brand, I want to hear that too.

Hope you and your kitties are all doing well.

Basically I feed a combination of Eukanuba Indoor formula and Wiskas pouches but each of my three have their own diets...and all have silky shiny coats soft coats. I have also used Nutro Indoor and Iams...and had no problems.

Bentley 2 1/2 years...dry food only...he voluntarily stopped eating wet food at about 1 year old.

Alastair 1 yr 3mos....predominantly dry food only...he eats the scraps of wet Finster leaves behind...Alastair's digestive system and wet food don't really agree...

Finster 1yr this month...must have wet food to "lubricate" his diet otherwise he blocks up...he gets the pouches 2x per day and eats about 3/4 of it.

So, truth is...I spend more on the dry and skimp on the wet as not only do I have 3 Tonks, I have 2 Greyhounds who must be on premium food.

Chris has elevated kidney values so I feed him a prescription KD (Kidney Disease) diet that I buy at the vet for about $30 for a 10lb bag. I mix it with Purina Cat Chow so that it's about 75% KD and 25 Cat Chow. The KD diet has brought Chris' kidney values back to within normal range.

Liat is just short of 2 and gets Purina Indoor Cat Formula. Her caot is sleek and she is full of energy, sometimes too full of energy.

Emily and Eddie always have access to dry Science Diet hairball formula. At night, they share a can of Fancy Feast -- that's where I hide the meds when they need to have them, as Emily does right now for her inflamed gums.
They also get occasional treats--the soft ones in the resealable pouch.

My Kleo always ate fancy feast wet and science diet dry. She was on the bigger side, but she also had a lot of snacks and people food

Currently, Rigby and Isabella are on a strict diet of just Iams now. My vet SWEARS by it, so, that's what we're sticking to. I've done a lot of reading online in the past, and kittykind.org is a good reference site for food recommendations, and types of litter, etc. I've read that science diet is not the best. Iams is acceptable. We used to do wellness, but had some bathroom issues - and think it is possible it was just too rich for them. so back to the Iams. The vet on the holistic vet site on here adamantly opposes any dry food...he seems to believe it causes many health issues and weight gain.

although, that is what the kitties prefer. so i compromised - they get wet food 2x a day, and i sprinkle dry food on top. that does the trick. and then they get a dry food snack-time before bedtime. Rigby hates the hairball formula, but i still mix it in with the original dry food.

so far, so good. no bathroom issues, no weight issues, everyone is pretty and energetic and shiny with no dandruff. so, we're all happy

I started with Nutro Natural Choice and switched to Wellness after a few vomiting incidents, and Levi tolerated that well, but the vet who neutered him recommended all wet now because it is lower in carbs and he said neutered males tend to chunk up after neutering. Since Innova Evo is lo carb, I do a mix of 3 oz Wellness wet kitten food and about 1 cup of Innova Evo dry now, and so far he likes it well. I had switched to the regular Innova for Ricky I after realizing the Iams was why he vomited up his food frequently. I was going to use Wellness for a year then switch to Innova because there is no specific kitten formula with Innova, but Evo says it is for cats and kittens. It is made with human grade products, as is the Wellness, but balanced and formulated for the cats. Hopefully it will work out for him.
