ecb Oct 14, 2003 09:56 AM

well, maybe you DO have an idea

After all that Joe is going through, and all I read up on with Marcias site, I was VERY nervous about it all going well
AND IT DID *whew*

now for more advice
how do you WAIT 6 months for these little angels to pip?
it would (and will) drive me MAD!!!

It will drive you mad the first clutch. It will never cease to be an exciting experience but if you are successful and continue to breed them you will get a little more comfortable with the wait, almost!

I worry all of the time that something will happen and I will lose the eggs or that the babies won't come out OK or will be too weak or deformed. You never rest easy until they are all out. But then, isn't that how we feel when we are PG? I know I did

And, as if you hadn't noticed, I do get quite excited every time I find a gravid female, eggs, or that first hatchling. I think that any of us who will ever experience this will find it to be very rewarding. I am really excited to know that there are others out there that are joining me in rearing these little ones.

Kudos to you!

the heat this morning was in the 80s for the eggs, I took the heat away altogether

will that hurt them?
it might have been as high as 89 at some point
I have the probe IN the dirt, so I know how warm they are, not just the box

That's quite a bit higher than needed but for such a short time you will probably be alright.

Let us know when you have a chance to candle them

they were orange or pink each
none red, none white
I do not want to tilt them, so I M not messing with all of them
I M hopeful, we shall see
if I cn get some vermiculite I will move them to a new container
otherwise I will just leave them in the dark dirt they are in and not bother washing them

Sounds like you have a good shot at being a baby MHD mommy!

I would try to move them to the perlite just to get them to something where the moisture can be better controlled. With perlite if it is too wet it seems to sit in the bottom and jso that the eggs aren't too wet. It can dry out quickly but I jsut think it does a better job with moisture and it is pretty clean. I mix equal parts of perlite and water by weight. Once you mis this you will have a good idea of what weight should be and how it should feel so that you can maintain the proper moisture.

The one downfall with perlite is that if the baby hatches and the perlite sticks to the yolk sac it can dry it out causing problems for the baby. What I usually do is move the eggs to a small kritter keeper with damp paper towels in the bottom when they have started to pip. When one or two eggs is slit I just move them all to the delivery room Then when the baby hatches it has a moist substrate and is contained so you don't have to go looking for or chasing new hatchlings.

I don't think I would wash them, just sort of brush the dirt off as it drys a bit. It really shouldn't hurt anything.

It is best not to mess with them too much so you are wise to just peek in to check for bad eggs and to monitor the moisture.

Congrats again,
