finding a kitten

Cailin Aug 11, 2006 10:37 AM

Hi! I am new to the forums and hoping maybe someone here can help me. I am looking for a female tonkinese kitten. Seems like I've tried every breeder there is! I live in RI, so the kitten either has to be close by, or can be shipped.

Thanks!

Hi Cailin,
Welcome to the Tonk board!

Check the Tonkinese Breed Association website (www.tonkinesebreedassociation.org). They have a list of breeders by state so you might be able to find someone close to you there.

I have to recommend the cattery that gave us our two beautiful babies. They are in Atlanta, but I am very sure they will ship humanly.

You can watch the kittens on a webcam and between the kids, assistants, dog and cattery owners, our babies came to us after receiving a lot of attention and care.

Your babies are precious and I'm so glad they found you.

However, I looked at your breeder's website and I do have to say that what I saw there gives me some concern:

1. They have six different breeds of cats, but they do not appear to have memberships in any of the specific associations concerned with those breeds.
2. Payment options (e.g., credit card info) and lots of photos labeled "Sold" are featured prominently on their home page. Strikes me as a bit overly commercial.
3. Their web site says they ship to anywhere in the U.S. and to selected international destinations. The thought of a tiny, 12-week-old-kitten undergoing that experience is not a pleasant one for me.

I'm sure these folks are wonderful people and clearly you got two wonderful pets from them. But I would sure feel more comfortable getting my cat from a small breeder who is actively involved with the breed, whom I could visit, and who is not in it as a full-time business. I also would personally never allow an animal--any animal--to be shipped. Too many horrer stories associated with what can happen in that cargo compartment. (Now, travelling with a person in the cabin is another story altogether...)

Not a criticism, just an opinion FWIW, which may not be much...

Via private message I hooked Cailin up with my breeder in NY who she said is close enough for her to pick up, as Debra does not ship. They have been in contact with each other and will keep me posted...

(I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works out and she gets one of Finster's nieces who were recently born out of that pretty pretty Jocelyn.)

Ohhhhhh, Jocelyn is gorgeous!
I must say that I agree with Carol. Breeding too many breeds gives me the impression of a "mill type" operation (not saying it is, IMHO it's just too many cats). I also couldn't agree more about shipping. When I get more cats, I plan to buy within a three state area so that I can physically go and visit the breeder, get an impression of the premesis , most importantly, TALK to the breeder and ask the hundred questions I have, look at how the cats are living, and give the breeder a chance to size me up also. If I buy a kitten or kittens, I will then take them home with me.

WELCOME TO THE TONK BOARDS!!

Hi everyone!

I got a great recomendation from Lisa about a breeder on Long Island. Debra's got three girls (she's got boys too, but I want a girl) ready this week for me to chose from. I am going to go pick my new kitten up on Tuesday! Now the really hard part... picking a name!

Just remember: Tonks are like potato chips, can't have just one! Though I only have my 10yr old retired stud (neutered of course, has been for years) solid blue Bumbles right now. As soon as I get myself on my feet $ wise you can bet I'm going to be getting me some more Tonks! Though I might be bringing home a Ragdoll kitten soon. A breeder I've been showing with for YEARS has some show quality boy kits she looking for a good home for and is willing to GIVE me one cause she knows 1) I've always wanted one of her Raggies and 2) I'll show him as an alter. I'll most likely go meet the kits she has the end of Oct since the show that month will be near to her house. I'm thinking of the name Tattletail or Tristan...
