Cats that chew

moksha Dec 15, 2006 01:52 PM

My boy is 10 months old and over the last 3 months has developed a sucking behavior that has now elevated to chewing. At first he would chew holes in our mattress, a chair, and in blankets, but this morning I found a hole in the carpet! He actually chewed a hole straight down to the cement. I rent my home and could never afford to recarpet, so any ideas on how to stop this behavior before it gets even worse? We have two other cats who he plays and cuddles with as well as plenty of attention from me, so I dont think it is due to boredom..what else could it be?

Siamese cats are predisposed to a certain behavior called "wool sucking" which can progress into "wool chewing"...it's not as prevalant per se in Tonks...but...being that they are partly Siamese I guess sometimes they have to gentically get more than just the good looks!!!!

Here is an article about it...I'm familiar with it because my Finster is the resident sock eater...

Hope this helps...

My Eddie used to gnaw on socks. Now I make sure he always has at least one of those soft furry cat toys available to him. That seems to satisfy his need to gnaw. (Of course I have to keep a close eye on them so when he chews a hole in one I can throw it away before he tries to eat the stuffing.)
Maybe it would be worth a try to see if you can redirect your kitty's attention.
