kitten supplies- box

mscm95 Sep 04, 2007 11:38 AM

Im just planning for my new kitten still but was wondering what is the best type of litter box? If I get an adult and a kitten should I get two boxes? Uncovered little one for the kitten and covered one for the adult? Can they use the same one? Do I need one for each floor of the house?

I had cats growing up but that was a long time ago and then I had a stray as an adult and when he urinated he sprayed the wall so I had to get a covered one for him. I dont know if that was because he was used to being outdoors or if that is the norm.

Thanks!

I used World's best. as kittens, they get kick it up, and breathe it in. i used this just the first year, till they got a little bigger. but even today, i use a less expensive natural pine litter. there's a website kittykind.org that recommends food and litter.
my two have one jumbo covered litter box which works out great. but Izzy was So small when i got her, i actually used a pie pan for a litter box. her legs were so short! hahah.

i don't think you need 2 boxes, but maybe in the beginning, if the kitten is small... but if you think they can climb into a normal size litter box, then i would get a large dome one.
i only have an apartment, so i'm not sure if you need one on both floors, but i think my friends (with multi layer homes) have the box on just one level.

Find out what your breeder uses for the type of litter box and litter she uses...(especially if you are getting a queen) it will make the transition easier...once they are settled in the house you can experiment and switch...

most cats are kind of particular about this...and will refuse to use the litter box if they don't like it, and no need upsetting him/her/them and causing unwanted surprises all over your home...

I was lucky...Bentley could care less what type of litter or box he is in just as long as it is "fresh"...my parents not so lucky...their second retired stud protested the first few days...she had to mix the litter types in gradually to get him to switch...

One large box for two cats is also sufficient...
