Tonkinese versus Burmese

baka Oct 05, 2007 06:24 AM

I wonder if anyone has owned two cats together or at different times. I am interested to know your comparative assessment of their personalities. Is Burmese more owner-loving cat than a Tonk?

I only have a tonk (Sina is currently 10 months) but like you, before getting her I considered a burmese. Actually, I took interest in burms first. In the end, I couldn't find a burm breeder within even a day trip distance of my house, or at least none that had kittens when I was looking.

Once I found more info about tonks I determined that they were a better fit for me anyway. As far as attachment goes, my baby Sina is pretty much a velcro cat- she is sitting next to me right now. She also greets me at the door when I come home, follows me from room to room, and sleeps on my bed. I have another cat (a devon rex) but Sina would much rather be with me.

Another note on burmese versus tonkinese. Ok, so I had never met a tonk before I got one. I had also never met a burmese. When I went to pick Sina up from the vet after being spayed there was a woman waiting with a siamese and a burmese! So I only met the burm very briefly, but I was very suprised at how squished his face really was... very similar to a persian. Just seeing pictures I really didn't understand how flat their faces really are! As I am not a huge fan of squished faces (not to mention that they can result in breathing problems) I am very happy that I went with a tonk.

It's an acquired taste...

I asked my breeder once what separates the Tonks she sells as pets vs the ones she sells as show, keeps for show, or breeds...she said the head...ironically, the standard for show present more of the flatter Burmese face and rounder vs. almond eyes.

My Alastair is from her line of Regional winners...here is a picture of him, and below is her current champion well on his way to the top and below him a picture of Ali's father who was a show cat and one of her prolific studs...I'm sure you will see the difference in the face...personally I'm with you Cailin...I'm not a big fan of the flatter face...(although they are all beautiful)
