Can overheat or a stressed out environment cause a dragon...

louiec Oct 14, 2003 10:49 AM

to eat less and not poop daily...

I was talking to someone who has a beardie... and was asking me if there is anything wrong with her dragon... the dragon is a decent size for her age... but she says the dragon doesnt eat as much as it used to and doesnt poop as much... but when it does its is a lil runny...

now I am no expert but the tank she had the poor dragon in (15 gallon and the dragon is around 6 months old) and she has I believe a Powersun right on top of the tanks lid (a screen lid) so i told her that 1st get the dragon a bigger tank... cuz its needs more room and that bulb is def to hot for the small of an enclosure... but can possibly be used for the bigger one...

now I told her that I am no expert... but maybe its small enclosure and overheating was causing the dragon eat less, poop less, and have runny stool...

hopefully after she makes these changes the beardie will be healthy again...

if not I guess a vet visit might be in order...

so what do u guys think? I really hope the dragon doesnt have anything wrong with it... the owner was just not given the right care info... unfortunatley... (she said she didnt even know they got that big)... goes to show how some people are willing to do anything to sell a dragon to anyone...

hopefully now she will care for it

first she needs a larger enclosure and a digital thermometer or heat gun to be sure she has the correct temps, correct temps are so very important, if she has been living in very high temps for too long she could have neurological damage, mvb bulbs for most part are for larger enclosures, i wonder what wattage she has on that 15 gallon. she needs to check those temps.

sounds like she needs to know the basics, does she have internet? send her to www.beautifuldragons.com, she has a good caresheet and other info about heat/lighting etc, she needs to do some reading for that basic info. in a 15 gallon with that light i doubt there is the proper heat gradient to allow for thermoregulation. With how much she knows there could be a number of factors why this dragon isnt thriving as well, substrate, diet, supplements, hydration. hopefully you can give us more info but more importantly give her the proper info she needs to provide a good home for her dragon.

I def gave her all the info I know... (that I have learned from here and other sites)...

and gave her a few sites to visit (one being the one you mentioned)

I explained how diet, a proper enclosure, right amount of heat, etc etc... is all very important... she felt so bad when I explained to her all this cuz u can tell she really though she was doing the right thing...
but now she is happy... that she has more information to work with...

hopefully she will contact me soon to let me know how things are goin...
