Dominique's Status

2dzzz Sep 02, 2008 08:04 AM

We are cautiously optimistic about Dominique today. She spent the night at the emergency vet, and each time we called, we were told she was "the same" and still in the oxygen tent. This morning when we called at 6 am we got the same report, and were having some grave thoughts. When my husband picked her up, though, the vet said she did really well coming off of the oxygen & her breathing was normal. She needed to go to her regular vet today to be monitored. Her vet said she should be ok, with her cardiac meds that she will need to take every day. The vet said that Dominique must have done a great job compensating for her heart's difficulties, as the vet was surprised when my DH told her that Dominique had played with us when we were making the bed yesterday morning & was fine! She said it was unusual for this to come on so fast. Dominique is there at the vet now, & I will hopefully pick her up later in the day to come home. She will need to go back on Friday to see how she is responding to the meds.

Thanks to all of you for your kind thoughts!

Dominique is now home & resting on her (our) bed. She seems tired, not her usual perky self, but she probably hasn't slept much in the past 2 days, so I am trying to be positive. She didn't eat at the vet at all, or drink, and didn't once she got home either. She is sleeping, and is purring too. Hopefully she will come downstairs in a little while to eat & drink. She has to take enalapril once a day, & has to go back on Friday.

Be very careful that she doesn't become dehydrated.
When Emily had 5 teeth extracted a number of years back (on 9-11, actually--as if having her so upset wasn't enough to deal with) she wouldn't eat or drink and I had to take her in twice to be hydrated. The first time was just one day after her oral surgery.

I know, I am very worried about that. I keep coming in to visit her. She went by herself to the sink & had a little bit of water, a few licks about a half hour ago. And I just got her to make a little tiny lick of water from her cup when I brought it over to her. She has me so worried! There's no way to reason with a cat--please, drink a little water for me? I can't think of what to do. She hasn't eaten a bite either. I have to go to work tomorrow. My DH says she is very traumatized by this experience, plus she still has the heart problem which won't go away, it will take her a while to settle down. He reminded me that when she was a kitten & we took her home, she didn't eat for 5 days. And my DD says that she just needs to get over this very scary situation.

Will keep you apprised.
