What Do You Think?

MaybeATonk Oct 17, 2008 10:19 PM

We adopted Maizy in July. The shelter told us she was Siamese.

To me, she looks more like Tonkinese. She's very smart. Plays fetch, watches TV and is very playful. She has a dip in the middle of her nose, not sure if that is characteristic or not. Plus, she has the softest most silky fur I've ever felt.

Sad start to her life. Someone turned the entire litter in to the shelter when the kittens were four weeks old. Two in the litter had died. She was fostered for a short time and then she came back to the shelter. She was three months old when we adopted her (along with an adorable tabby!).

See her pic below. I think she resembles a Tonkinese but was wondering what the "Tonk people" might think!

Welcome to the Tonk board!!

First of all, Maizy is beautiful.
That's beyond dispute.

Having said that, it's tough to tell from just this one picture, but she certainly could be a Tonk. She also could be a traditional, or what they call applehead, Siamese.

What she definitely is not is one of today's standard Siamese. They have been bred to be very angular.

Will be interested to hear what others on this board have to say, and if there's any way to tell for sure.

Thank you for the response and compliments! I guess it doesn't really matter what breed she is, she's a beautiful cat full of personality. We're so lucky to have been able to adopt her before someone else did!

I was drawn to her because of her color. I had a couple of purebred Siamese (a seal point and a frosted lilac) who were with me for 18 and 20 years. I love the Siamese personality and intelligence and I'm really enjoying living with a "Tonk!"

Your kitten looks 100% tonk. When I adopted my Frosty (his picture is the main page of this forum) he was 3 months old as well. Your kitten looks so much like him, except yours have more acqua eyes than blue.

Oh yes, she looks so much like your beautiful kitty!

I've lived with two purebred Siamese cats who were the loves of my life. I loved their huge personalities and I'm finding Maizy has one as well.

Unfortunately, she has a chronic inflammatory condition and has had uveitis and gum inflammation most likely something she picked up at the shelter. She's being treated and is doing well but she may eventually lose her teeth if the process cannot be stopped.

I added another picture of her with her best friend (adopted at the same time)Murphy.

What a great picture. Murphy is just precious, too!

I hope that Maizy's gum inflammation is just something passing, but Tonks are prone to chronic gingivitis. Emily has it, and has already had a number of teeth extracted. I keep close tabs on her gums and she goes on meds when the problem flares up. There is a possibility that at some point she may need to have the rest of her teeth extracted, but from everything I have heard and read she will be able to adapt to that just fine if it comes to it.
Please keep us posted, and keep those pictures coming!!

Thanks you!! That picture is from when he was just a couple of months old. He's about 15 months old now, but still very cute!

Here is one more cute photo of him when he was a kitten:

Looks like a Tonk to me. Very much like my Dulcie. Yes I know I haven't posted pics yet. I am having problems getting them down to size so the system will accept them.

Hope you manage to get the pictures up soon!

How is Liat doing with her new little friend?

Liat blows hot and cold when it comes to Dulcie. Sometimes she hisses and spits and sometimes they run through the house together like best buddies. I never know from one minute to the next whats going on.
