Ah you Scrabble fans! Always on the lookout for the next killer word! My brother plays french scrabble - it keeps him out of trouble.

Hubby and I have another word game we made up. We're always on the lookout for words writers use but you never hear spoken. This weekend we heard "miscrents" in a movie. Great word you read in novels but it was the first I'll ever heard it spoken. One of my all time favorites? paramour. Lover is so much simpler

love using 2 letter words. master them and you almost never get stuck with tiles. my favorites...
xi,xu,qi (new one),hm,mm,oe,aa,ai,ag,ka, and jo.

really wanna screw with someone...use the word 'cwms' (it's pluralized). its a glacial cirque.

best word i ever made.... my friend nancy put down the word 'nob' between two x3 words. just far enough to make it tough she thought. i added all 7 of my tiles. made the word 'cornobbled' and hit both x3 spots. she tried to call me on it. i showed her in the regular dictionary that it was a legal word (scrabble dictionary only shows up to 8 letter words or so). it's the past tense version. it's meaning...you will love this....to hit someone with a fish. i kid you not, lou.

I hadn't played since I was a young teen until recently. I played with a couple out-of-town friends. I absolutely hated it. Scrabble has come a long way since I last played and the new enthusiasts play on a whole new field. Gone are the days that words had to be in a standard English Dictionary. They used words similar to what you used above that generally aren't found in a standard Dictionary, aren't used in writing and speaking that we see day-to-day, and are only found in a Scrabble Dictionary. How many times does one see or hear "oe, aa, ka, em, en, el, etc.," in "real life"? Who uses the word, "Xi" in any other application than Scrabble? What is, Xi? Apparently, it is also legal to spell out the letters of the alphabet. "M" is something like "em"... Do folks even know the meaning to the new gimmick words they memorize and use? But, don't get me wrong, I could see they love it and respect the new level Scrabble has been taken to, but gone are the days when you could just use words found in the regular dictionary... You now have to use words you have no idea what they mean and never use for any other application. They offered to send me lists of two and three letter gimmick words that are circulating around to memorize for the purpose of playing Scrabble, but I passed...

xi is part of the ancient greek alphabet. includes alpha, omega, delta, tao, phi, sigma, lambda, and beta.
xu is a monetary unit in asia.

Thanks for the definitions. I do respect modern day Scrabble, it has to be a lot of work to learn all the two and three letter words that are not commonly used and are found mostly in Scrabble circles on lists and in the Scrabble Dictionary (vs. the standard English Dictionary). I love that friends of mine love it. Anything that gets people to use their brain and laugh is awesome (including the older style Scrabble). Memorizing two and three letter word lists and the Scrabble Dictionary just isn't for me.

One question -- I know you can't use foreign words/languages in old style scrabble per the rules -- can you now do it? I am referring to Xu...

lou,
if you like scrabble but lack a partner there is a very similar game on yahoo. called literati. if anything it can help you keep up with new words and other tactics.
