Teaching job

JaimeMarie Aug 02, 2006 07:32 AM

I accepted a teaching position yesterday. I will now be a teacher in grades k to 8th. I will be the one and only teacher in the school. I will have two paras to help me. There will be a total of 8 to 10 students.
I will be moving 4 hrs away from my friends and family but I need the experience. So I figured this is the best move for me. I am also going to try to take classes the University near the school!

Congratulations!!!! This will be marvelous experience. You can be like the girl in the For Better or Worse cartoon when she moved away from home and teach. This will be a challenge, though, and lots of preparation time for the various ages so I, personally, would not try to take courses this first year. Give yourself a chance to see what's required on the job before taking on the load of schoolwork for yourself. Then, next year, you'll know what you can add.

I think this is exciting. Know it will be scary but you'll do well and I know you're excited!

Wow! Congratulations Jaime!

I know how hard it will be to move so far away, but what an amazing experience this should be! I can't imagine having so many grade levels at once, although you will have an absolutely terrific student/adult ratio! I would have jumped at the chance to do something like that during my teaching days!

Best wishes to you! I hope you have internet access so you can check in!

Hi Jaime,

Congratulations on the new job! I hope you enjoy it. It sounds like it might be really interesting -- maybe more variety than a conventional teaching position and a chance to really know the students because the school is so small.

Good luck with all of it.

Thanks everyone for the well wishes. I know it sounds like a lot but I am going to take one class at the college each semester. I only plan on staying one to two years.

Had to laugh when I read this, Jaime. Made me think of a friend who only planned to teach "a couple of years" and went on to retire after 32 years in the classroom.

I suspect you'll adore having your own classroom, especially in such a neat and unusual setting. Much better than a packed class of thirty or forty kids in a school of a couple thousand!

This sounds like such a wonderful opportunity and experience!!!!

We don't have schools that large up here in Maine. And usually not more than 18 kinders in a class. The largest I have seen is 19.
So hopefully I can move back down here soon.
