cat deterrent?

ThreeCalicos Aug 11, 2006 09:33 PM

A friend has asked me if there's any sort of deterrent to keep a neighbor's cats from using her flower beds as a litter box. They refuse to keep the cats indoors and she doesn't want to put anything out to harm the cats. (Hers are indoor cats.) She's tried something she bought at Petsmart but it didn't work. Seems like I've seen posts about a successful treatment but all I can remember is using big cat dung from the zoo. She doesn't think that a good solution. Can anyone offer help or suggestions? Any ideas appreciated! Thanks, Katc

I have heard mothballs deter cats. Maybe if burried around the perimeter of the garden in the form of a burrier (just far enough out to not seep into the veggies as they grow)?

I just re-read yours and realized it was flowers only, not food. You may be able to mix the mothballs much closer and heavier in and around the flowers. Something to read up on on the internet.

I dont know of anything fool proof, but supposedly cats dislike the smell of citrus...

Moth balls are poisonous to cats so I wouldn't recommend them. Some people have recommended citrus peels buried in the soil. There is a product with dried coyote urine that is supposed to be a repellant. Supposedly humans can't smell it but other animals can.

Hey Katc

I have an indoor cat and was sick of other cats coming and tormenting her through the patio doors. So I bought a cat scarer which is a motion sensor device which gives off a quick ultrasonic noise to scare away cats. It seems to work and Pepsi doen't get affected by it indoors with double glazing.

We bought it online at about maybe $40 equivalent, it's battery operated.

I am digging deep in my memory, but I recall someone once having a motion activated sprinkler that worked... Does that ring any bells?

I've always heard that citrus is a cat deterrent--maybe some orange and lemon peals around the garder. Will need to be changed fairly often so they don't rot!
