Modern Conveniences

cyclopsgrl Jan 26, 2007 04:27 PM

I was listening to a radio program this week and they did a survey and asked folks what modern convenience can't they live without. Washing machine, microwave, dishwasher, cell phone, and computer topped the list of what people replied with in the survey.

Which of the five would you give up first on the list if you had to?

I would give up my cell phone first and with the least pain (I rarely use it -- it is just for emergencies).

Hi There!

I would also give up my cell phone first. Can't remember the last time I used it!

Lost the dishwasher when I married - Still surviving
Never owned a microwave until I was married. Its okay.
I can live without a house phone, but not a cell phone - perish the thought!

Think the dishwasher would go first.
Enjoy having the convenience and security of cell phone.
Too addicted to e-mail now to want to give up computer
although could but I'd miss everyone!
Like the speed of the microwave.

Hate to hand wash anything so washer is a definite keep.

Sad how dependent we are on all these, especially considering
the only one around before I was an adult was the washer!

The dishwasher. I had a dishwasher when we lived in an apartment, but gave it up when we bought our house ten years ago.I never had another dishwasher installed and I don't even miss it.

On another note: if you could only keep one modern convenience, which would it be? Mine would be the computer. I've lived without some of the others, but it would be difficult if I couldn't have my computer.

Great minds think alike! LOL. I was going to ask that question next... That was acutally the context of the original survey that produced the list of five. They are the top five Americans say they can't live without (voting for only one to make the list)

For me, hand washing clothes would be tough... I would have to say wash machine would be the last to go... Unless we can cheat and drive to a laundromat!

I don't remember the line-up of all of the survey answers, but do remember washing machine was #1 by far that Americans said they can't live without. I think the context of the survey is, it is gone, never invented, you have none -- meaning no laundromat to go to.

In that case, I'll change my answer to washing machine. If I was able to go to a laundromat my former answer applies, but if the washer wasn't even invented yet, it would be tough. I wouldn't want to have to wash clothes by hand.

Good question! With allergies, I really need to have the washer, although I have washed many a shirt in the sink just because I didn't even have a half load to go in. Bedding would kill me so the washer has to be #1. But I love my computer - from contacting family to photo printing to budget spreadsheets, it has been a huge help in life.

How true! I remember when my parents bought their first microwave - it was so new that for several days friends, family and neighbors came over to see it. Mom would make baked potatoes in it while everyone stood around and watched! Can you imagine?

Big Scary Man wants to weigh in - his vote for an item he can't live without is not on the list - the flush toilet!

OK. If we're going back that far, flush toilet is right up there on the top of the list! And running water and electricity!
Camping is okay for a couple of days but I'd not want to do it
permanently!

Excellent point. We've had a cold snap out here and I can't even imagine running out to an out-house this time of the year. Having to get fully dressed, etc... Although, I think the Chamber Pot is used for middle of the night. Still... Excellent item on the write-in ballot by BSM. Indoor plumbing rocks.

I was surprised TV didn't make the top of the list...

I would have to agree here - I remember the days when my grandparents did not have the modern convenience of a bathroom- it was either the "chamber pot" or the outhouse and I didn't like either as a child. Running water in the house was done with a pump that had to be primed before you could even get the water to flow. Cooking was done on a coal stove. However, they did have the old-fashioned wringer washing machine.

I would give up the dishwasher since I don't have one and really don't need one obviously. Second would be the cell phone, I only carry it when I leave home in case of an emergency.

PHTessie Jan 30, 2007 07:25 PM

Okay, back to the original question, cell phone would be the first to go...never had one and dont want one...sheesh, haven't any of you read Stephen Kings book Cell? Scary!

That's an easy one for me- my dishwasher. I seldom use it. I have always just done my dishes by hand, even when all of the kids were home. Now, I use mine only on rare occassions when I am either pressed for time or when the kids show up and eat dinner here.

I'm with you on of those the cell phone would go before the others

JaimeMarie Feb 08, 2007 05:09 PM

I would get rid of dishwasher, than microwave, cell phone, computer, than washer (if it wasn't invented)

If I could go to the laundromat I would put washer between microwave and cell phone.

One thing I couldn't live with out a washer, but the comptuer is a close second. It's the way I stays in contact with my family now i live in scaryville.
