Reaching out from Iowa......

gocatgo Feb 25, 2007 06:14 AM

Yesterday afternoon a winter storm set in, first rain, then snow, followed by ice, broken trees falling on power lines and the whole city is practically paralyzed for the next day or two. Luckily my neighborhood has underground power lines because many trees are breaking due to the heavy ice coating all of the trees. The river birch branches in my front yard is suffering from a heavy coat of ice and I fear that it's a goner. My neighbor's large birch is falling on my blue spruce in the front yard. Her house is unoccupied as her house is up for sale and she's living elsewhere. Her large tree in the backyard is breaking and falling on the privacy fence, damaging the fence. In the backyard, my blue spruces and the gorgeous magnolia tree which was in full bud, seems to be doing OK, but probably won't bloom this year.

I just saw on the news that 135,000 homes are without power in Iowa.

December and January were nice warm months in Iowa, and then about a week into February all heck broke loose, first with below freezing temps and now this. It was in the high 50s on Thurs of this week.

I hope that you all are doing fine with the weather in your area and life is treating all of your kitties well.

We got some of the freezing rain here in Indiana. It wasn't as bad as other places, though. The roads were slick, but there was no heavy build-up of ice & no power outages in our area.(that I know of, anyway.) Right now the temperature is 37 so some of the ice is dissolving into just rain. Hopefully, it won't get much worse than this. I hope the power comes back on soon for the others.

I heard from my parents in Iowa early yesterday. They had 1/2 an inch of ice and were expecting about 14" of snow. They mentioned a lot of people were without power. I plan on calling them in a bit to see how things are.

We have a storm hitting here out east. Started in the wee hours this morning and will run a steady 24 hours until tomorrow morning. Right now it is just sloppy, thick wet snow hitting. Expecting ice and wintery mix overnight to really mess with morning commutes. Has the potential to be bad as it is going to accumulate non-stop for 24 hours...

Just spoke to my parents. They are in a small city outside of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They have been without power since last night. It is about 50 degrees in the house (they're bundled up with layers), but temp will drop more tonight when the sun goes down. They will stay in a hotel tonight and possibly tomorrow night. They heard it could be up to 3 days until power is back on. They weren't hit with any of the large amount of snow predicted, just the ice portion that took out power lines...

Oh my heart goes out to your parents. It's cold here and to be without power is not good. I'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers that their power is restored soon and they keep warm.

I understand that some parts of Des Moines still does not have power either. It's finally stopped snowing but is supposed to either rain or snow tonight again. Not good for driving in the morning.

My parents called -- their power came on about an hour or so ago. They went not quite 24 hours without. They feel lucky as so many are still without power. Fortunately, they will not have to stay in a hotel a couple nights...

Tammy, they are indeed lucky! I know that one night not too long ago when our power went out for a couple of hours, it was wasn't any fun for us. I'm happy for your parents and hope that they don't have anymore weather related problems.

Glad to hear they are with power again! I hope it stays on!

Tammy, I hope that your parents don't get 14" of snow. I can't even imagine that but I understand that they were having several feet in New York a week or two ago.

And as for you, if it's snowing or even rain/snow mixed, it'll get cold tonight and will probably be dangerous driving tomorrow.
I'll be glad when this is all over.

I took some pics with my Kodak Easy Share and even got them loaded on the computer but can't load in the picture gallery because I guess that I don't know how to size them. I can send some to your email address if you want.

Ellen, it's still snowing here and is supposed to snow some more tonight...like we really need it. Then clear Tues and Wed and then more rain and snow again on Thurs and Friday. This is just like the early March ice storm that we had in '89 where I slipped on the ice and broke my hip. I was on crutches for a long time.

I'll be sure be glad when it moves out of Iowa. It's headed east but I hope that it continues to miss you.

Hi Jaime!!! Good to talk to you again! I took some pics with my Kodak but can't upload them to the photo gallery because they are too large and I don't know how to size them. If you want, I'll send some to you via email

I'm so happy we are missing out on this one. A week ago I had to clear a 4" ice crust BEFORE I could shovel the snow. What a mess! Didn't leave the house for 3 days...

Take care out there!

Elizbeth

Yeah right, Elizabeth. Tried it and got as far as 'select a photo'...'open in edit mode'. Didn't see anything saying 'save as'. This is from the Kodak album. heehee.

Just got back from taking more pictures. The tree in the front yard is totalled with all of the branches hanging to the ground. I wonder how much it's going to cost to take that tree out and plant another one? I just went out Friday and ordered a new $600 Maytag dishwasher. Mine just started leaking. Pat, Karen's husband and my handyman, said that it's time to replace it. Man, if it's not one thing, it's another!

I couldn't even imagine clearing ice off of snow like you did. I'd just let it melt, I guess.

Hi Tessie,

I heard that we are to expect another round of the same thing come tomorrow night and into Friday. They are saying rain turning to ice late night and early morning, then up to 12 inches of snow later in the day. Thinking ahead, I put in for annual for both Thurs and Friday because I don't think that I want to drive to work in those conditions. I'd rather be safe than sorry.

That sounds pretty dismal - cold and no power. Glad everyone seems to be OK so far!
