This week's burning question is:

Diamonds or Pearls?

I think I am more of a pearl person.

BOTH! LOL
I guess pearls.

Diamonds. Pearls are low on my list. But, I don't really own any good Diamonds or pearls other than a 1/2 carat diamond I inherited and had reset into non-wedding setting. I have mostly sterling silver jewelry with some gold pieces... any "stones" I have are semi-precious (a couple blue topaz, citrine, peridot pieces)...

I also adore sterling jewelry, especially vintage pieces, and that's mostly what I wear. No hassle or worries and usually goes with everything! I don't have good luck with keeping stones in settings so, although I have a diamond wedding ring, only wear it for "dress-up" which doesn't happen all that often. LOL Same goes for the strand of pearls I have (only good thing to come from a former sister-in-law) But, sterling bracelets go everywhere and I have one narrow cuff one with no stones that I wear next to my watch absolutely every day. It's become my good luck piece, I guess, because don't feel dressed without it.

cyclopsgrl Mar 31, 2007 02:15 PM

Someone once commented on a silver bracelet that I had on that he liked it, but didn't think his wife would if he got it for her as she liked gold jewelry -- commented I was a silver person, his wife was a gold person.

I said, actually, I am a silver person because I can get beautiful, significant pieces for very little money comparatively. I would love to have some of my weightier pieces in gold, but just not affordable.

I tend to favor silver more as I have more of it... Also, as you said, I don't worry about it, no fuss... If I lose a piece or it breaks, it won't break the bank.

Diamonds are my birthstone although I didn't wear them until I got a custom made right hand ring several years ago. Most of what I could afford just wasn't "me". But it's a garnet ring that is my signature piece.

While I love pearls (we were shopping this week for a strand to give as a graduation gift) they don't fit in with my lifestyle. I'm just too rough.

Back in the flashy 80's I only wore silver while everyone else seemed to be wearing gold. I've out grown those pieces but have bombed in replacing them. I'm allergic to nickel. Since when did sterling contain nickel? Ugh!

teganslaw Mar 31, 2007 03:33 PM

I like both, so it's difficult to choose. I have a diamond engagement ring and a diamond circle necklace my husband gave me. I also have a strand of pearls, which I like. I always wear jewelry even when I stay home. If I don't have a ring, bracelet or necklace on, I don't feel completely dressed. And I constantly wear a watch. Silver is more affordable, but I have both silver and gold pieces.

Diamonds - however, my favorite is my emerald-cut diamond ring. For some reason, I like the style although it is not seen much today. I generally do not like pearls although they do go well with the "little black dress".

Much to my husband's misery, I have several diamond rings, diamond necklace, and a diamond bracelet. I figure the amount pretty much covers 35 years of birthdays, wedding anniversaries, etc. since we generally do not give each other gifts for these occasions. We tend to give each other gifts for no particular reason. But don't feel too bad for hubby - I gave him an in-ground swimming pool about 6 years ago, along with a new motorcycle. So I think we are even.

Love both diamonds and pearls. I have my grandmother's pearl necklace (it's a long one0, but don't wear it very much except for dress. Diamonds are indestructable,as long as the mounting is strong, so for klutz-o-matic, that is what I wear. Now I have on my engagement ring, and a diamond ring I won out of a slot (yes!) machine a few years ago. Only cost me $.25! Hubby has also bought me a diamond bracelet a few years ago, but only wear that for best.

Diamonds over pearls, however prefer rubies followed by emeralds.

Both! LOL

Actually, I wear very little jewelry. I design and made fashion jewelry to sell on the side, but rarely wear any myself. I wear my wedding ring set, two anniversary rings, and a sapphire ring my daughter gave me ... all very small rings ... and small earrings. Rarely a necklace. I do wear one of those rubber awareness bracelets (for lupus) almost constantly, though, in honor of my god-daughter who passed away from lupus 2 years ago.

As far as pearls or diamonds personality-wise ... I'm more June Cleaver than Marilyn Monroe.

I thought of you all tonight.

I went to the annual Habitat For Humanity Fund Raiser Dinner. They have a theme, past years were Wizzard of Oz, Circus, Mardi Gras... Tonight's Theme was "Rocking thru the 50s".

I don't recall the 50s, was born in the 60s, but my neighbor remembers vividly (she's 70 soon). I don't usually dress theme, but I did try to somewhat blend. Had a black skirt and a Peridot/Granny Smith Apple Green top...

Anyway, I cracked open the jewelry box and said, "Diamonds or Pearls?" The correct answer would have been pearls, but I went with a pair of bright blue topaz earrings and necklace to contrast w/the bright green.

My neighbor had on black top, black skirt, penny loafers w/white bobby socks, PEARLS, and a scarf, LOL...

No poodle skirt??? I remember wearing those, as well as the bobby socks and the oxfords. Oh and I hated those stiff crinlin slips that made your skirt stand out - nothing worse than having that rub on your legs or better yet - try to sit down in one of those things!

The poodle skirts, bobby socks, oxfords, FULL skirts, etc., were all there in full force, LOL. Some of the folks brought in old cars for display... They decorated very well and had 50s music playing.

The local High School was performing Grease, but, it was their last performance last night, so they weren't able to show up... It would have been perfect if they could have been there.

Had a great showing, tho. Raised $75,000 for the local Habitat For Humanity...

Okay, this question has generated enough interest is a short time to generate a sub queation --

If money were no object, would you wear silver or gold?

When I was younger, I would have said silver, but skin changes as it ages and Big Scary Man says I should wear gold, it makes me look better (he might be right, but I won't admit it yet!) so I have about an equal number of silver and gold peices.

Okay Tammy - you are magically covered it 18K or better! , but what would the rest you of you choose?

ThreeCalicos Mar 31, 2007 11:26 PM

Well,if money's no object, I'll have both! Really, guess I'd go for platinum since I like the look of silver with my coloring better. I do think some people look better in gold due to skin, hair and eye color. Never had heard it had to do with age and I've got plenty of that! But, I just like the warmth and patination of aged sterling. I also like big pieces and think big gold pieces look ostentatious or fake. (Maybe that's sour grapes LOL) I usually wear the little gold I have with certain outfits that "call for" that accent.

pmantone Apr 01, 2007 07:47 AM

I prefer silver, although I have one small gold-chain necklace that I like very well.

cyclopsgrl Apr 01, 2007 01:21 PM

Actually, I'd wear both. The colors of the outfit tend to tell me which will look better, silver or gold... Even tho I do have some gold pieces now, I do chose sliver over gold quite a bit...

So, if I had big bucks, I'd pick WHITE gold and YELLOW gold.

Ha!!!

Gold for me, no question. Although I do wear some silver, most of my favorite jewelery is gold or gold toned

And the jewelry stores there have some gorgeous ones!!!

PHTessie Apr 04, 2007 05:05 PM

Im with you! Emeralds or Rubies! I just dont get all the hubub over diamonds, they are pretty enough, but if all the diamonds in the world were released for market they would be worth about as much as a cubit zirconia, and those are just as pretty....i will take colored stones or pearls over diamonds any day

Well since I am waiting for a ring I'll have to say diamonds. But normal it depends on what I'm doing. I wear pearls to interviews. I'll wear diamonds out for the evening.

I like both but have more pearls as they are more affordable. I usually wear chain bracelets, whatever earrings that I am in the mood for and have those from very cheap to pretty expensive, a two toned watch, a gold irish friendship ring, and a sapphire and diamond gold ring that my parents got me years ago for graduation. Ruby is my birthstone but I love blue and wear lots of it not to mention when not at work, I live in blue jeans hence the sapphire ring. Always have earrings in, the chain bracelets and a gold chain around my neck with a cross on it.
