In or Out Part II

Do you thaw your meat in the fridge over night(s), or do you throw it on the counter in the morning for evening...? (a third option is defrost in the microwave, I suppose).

Both of my sets of parents are on the counter, another thing I never picked up... I am a fridge over a night or two, depending on the size of the meat...

They'll keep a pound of hamburger on the counter to thaw for hours... I suppose they haven't died yet... and they aren't alone in this practice...

OK, I am done now. I can't think of any more riveting questions to ask... Someone else has to come up with a question or two next week until Madame Alto comes back and has mercy on us...

I try to remember to take it out and place in refrigerator overnight. If I forget, I'll just take it out and let it thaw on the counter all day while I'm at work.

I'm from Iowa too. Ha! However I know that it can't hurt you because this is the way my family has always done it. Maybe there would be a danger to somebody who isn't used to it?

If I'm planning a big meal, it's thaw in the fridge. For those meals on the fly it's usually a combo of methods - maybe an hour max on the counter followed by a water bath or the microwave, depending on what I'm thawing.

We got a new microwave two years ago and I love it. You have to really work at it to cross that line between thawing and cooking. No more goofy, half frozen, half cooked chicken!

Usually try to thaw it overnight in the fridge. Never leave it out on the counter (Your cats must be more trustworthy than mine!) Sometimes memory gaps cause me to have to thaw in microwave but I try to avoid that. Katc

I'll toss in my two cents. I don't dare leave things out on the counter. If Paloma manages to get in the kitchen, she'd be at it immediately. She already fetches tomatoes, bananas, limes, etc off the counter.

I will add another method which works well for beef or the frozen boneless, skinless chicken breasts. I take them right from the freezer to the broiler, grill or foreman type grill. For thicker pieces, a quick thaw in the microwave works, too.

I thaw the meat out in the microwave. I don't cook that often to remember to put it in the fridge the day before. I also wouldn't trust leaving any food on the counter overnight. The cats would have a feast otherwise.

I put mine in the fridge. If I left it out and unattended here it would be gone when I came back. Trust me on this one. I had ShyRaven jump up on the counter once, grab a raw chicken breast and take off like the hounds of hell were after her. Took me a good 15 minutes of chasing her furry black behind all over the house before I got it from her. This would be a picture of the thief herself, trying to look innocent.

ShyRaven, just by looking in those adorable eyes, I can tell that you are innocent of all charges. But, if by chance, you admit your guilt, I can only say 'more power to you'. Your mommy should have let you have it because you worked so hard for it.

Sad to say, but I don't have to worry about the cats eating raw meat. As a matter of fact, I've been online all afternoon trying to learn how to get them to eat raw so that I can feed them a raw diet.

Now the butter though is a different story. If I don't put it in a covered butter dish, I'll come home to kitty cat lick marks all over the butter. KatyKatt is the one that I catch doing this.

Shy's motto is never admit to anything. As for the butter, with this crew, I would come home to no butter at all. And although I cooked the chicken breast in a way she did get it, they all shared it after it was cooked and deboned for their royal highness's.

I can't even get them to eat cooked chicken except for what's on my plate while I'm eating. I've tried everything so that I can get them off of commercial cat food. The recalls really bother me.

I won't give up though, every morning before I leave for work, I add some cooked chicken shreds and chunks to their canned. They do eat a little of it. I'm hoping that they'll get used to it enough that I can increase the chicken and decrease the canned.

Generally over night in the fridge except for some summer time exceptions.
