Can't do without

kittyromeo Aug 02, 2007 07:56 PM

This is from a conversation between Big Scary Man and his brother - what is something you would have done 10 years ago without thinking that just scares you, really frightens you today?

I said skydive or rock climb.

Brother in law said live without a cell phone.

That's tough...

10 years ago, I line danced occasionally (self-taught because we went out so much). It doesn't scare me today, but I'd think the sight would scare others more today than 10 years ago...

10 years ago, I would have had a baby, today, no way. To many biological risks, in addition to other reason (41 this month).

10 years ago, I was blindly in love. That scares me to death today.

10 years ago, I didn't manage money nearly as well as I do today. Younger and didn't know as much or care as much. I couldn't live without my 401K, IRA, mortgage (owning property)...

10 years ago, I would have spiral permed my hair. Not today...

Oh... 10 years ago I exercised regularly. Today it scares the death out of me, LOL...

11 years ago, I got out of the Air Force. The year prior, I was on the next rotation to Desert Storm/Shield. Was ready to go, will intact, etc. Today, if I were in, I'd still absolutely go if directed, but so much has happened, it scares me to death more today than 10 years ago the thought of heading over "there".

Having run the gauntlet of tests before Punky's birth (I'm 40) I'm sure the bigger risk is of having an overindulged child as a 40+ mother. At the zoo, the park, storytime at the library, there is invariably a hellion child causing problems for everyone while her middle aged mother watches, smiling.

I'd ask my friends to smack the crap out of me before I became that woman, but they're too busy - smiling, blissed out by their own creation(s) - who is running amuck, screaming, hitting the presenter and the other children.

I should have elaborated... My cousin had her four children in her late 30s to 40, no problems. My thought is for me personally, I am not married, so I wouldn't want to raise a child on my own and if I were to meet, marry, and decided to have a child at this point, I'd be even further into my 40s because the meet and marry part takes time to develop... Up to 40 and 40-couple wonderful if you want a baby... My "other reasons" include not wanting one. I am sure I will wind up with my niece some day as my Mom is now in her early 60s raising a 4 year old... Working wonderfully for now for them, but we don't know how my Mom's health will hold out well into her 70s, etc...

So, the biological reasons of being well into my 40s if it happens and "other" reasons are why I would have done it 10 years ago, but not now...

Ten years ago I was 21. I used to tuck down the mountain. I would never do that today. I moved to Cape Cod with out telling any one I was going. Just left. I wouldn't do that today. I moved to WA state at 22 to get married. Nope wouldn't do that either.
