Ho Ho Holiday Status Check...

cyclopsgrl Dec 01, 2007 04:23 PM

How's everyone doing this fine first day of December? I spent the day getting much of my holiday shopping finished up and sending out a big box to Texas. Now I have just a little local gift exchange shopping to do, but that is no hurry... It sucks having to get it done earlier in the month for out-of-state, but it is nice to have it almost done.

Now, the chore I say every year that I'll just skip, but never do... Christmas cards (and one Hanukkah card). Thru the years, I've pared it down from well over a hundred cards to 25 mailed out and 10 local cards... Still complain to myself about addressing the 25, LOL...

I never put a tree up since it is just me, so I just toss a few decorations out. I feel for those of you that put the honking tree and lights up (tho it is glorious when done).

Ho-HoHo bah humbug. Presents are all bought, not wrapped. Started in July. Tree is up, but completely bare. Lights are not on the house, hopefully tomorrow,as I opened a brand-new box and found half of the string of lights are dead. Back to K-mart. It will all get done, with the grace of God.

I might put the tree up tomorrow; not sure yet. I already ordered something for the cats from Drs. Foster and Smith catalog. (Although if Quentin keeps picking on Star, and being a brat, he might end up with nothing.)I still have my husband's present to buy, already know what I'm going to get him. I should have my cards sent out by the end of next week or soon after.
I don't have much to buy, so Christmas has never been real stressful for me.

The big tree is up, lights on, but only 6-10 ornaments. Someone small keeps taking them off! She also has a tree in her room, lights only.

Punky got the shock yesterday- She went running up the tree after her nap and the tree hissed at her! She jumped back 3 feet. After several moments, she spotted Stinky trying to sleep in the tree, laughed and walked off.

I only have one gift left to buy, I think. Everyday it seems Big Scary Man "remembers" someone else we need to acknowledge - plus birthday gifts, and college graduation..... If I get Punky's Christmas photos taken before Valentine's Day, I'll consider myself caught up! (but we went to a mega artsfest yesterday and shopped, shopped, shopped. I had a blast!)

I love the holiday craft fests they have around here. I haven't been to one in a couple years... Now that you reminded me, I'll have to get to one in the next couple weekends!

I dunno. Im getting a bit ambivalent about the whole thing...It's just me and the cats these days..but I like a tree, it's just so much work. I like the putting up part but not taking it down..sighhhh , but then I think, if we won't do it for ourselves why do it for someone else, and if we stop doing things pretty soon a lot of customs will disappear...remember those "good" dishes your mom kept stored away, the ones you only saw once or twice a year..to me it's kind of like that...take them out and use them..if we aren't good enough for them , who is? Am I making sense here, or am I just rambling...

Yes. Just like the heirloom or "special" jewelry we keep locked up in a safety deposit box that we only wear on special occasions and never take out or see again... Just sits in a cold box waiting on the next generation to store it. I had a pair of my Grandma's jade earrings like that. Mom had them for years and gave them to me. I finally decided I would wear them more than special. Took them to a jewler to have them put from a post to a lever back/hoop style so I would wear them more (they are long jade "sticks" about an inch long that look good as a dangle. It was at the jewler's I found out that Grandma's cherished 70 or 80 year old jade earrings are... glass. LOL. I don't have the heart to tell Mom or whomever I pass them on to (a niece). They'll go down in history as jade (only I and the jeweler know).

Makes sense to me too, Tessie. I use and wear my best stuff whenever I want to. My best jewelery does live in a safe in my house but I can get it out fairly easily and I use it. Why save it for some unknown person to wear later. It is mine and was purchased for me. And I love it.
