It's not easy being green (part 3)

Do you have any type of recycling in your area? Do you take advantage of it?

A decade and more ago, there were dumpster drop-off points around the county where you could recycle glass, newspaper, plastic and cans. Eventually it ended because they bred so many rats. ugh! In my hometown, there was curbside pick-up for a number of years but it was dropped because of cost.

My city is built with almost as many alleys as surface streets, so many of us share large barrels for trash pick-up. There is also a large recycling center near downtown, so we have nearly daily trollers for cans in our dumpsters. Anything metal will disappear within hours from the dumpsters, most days. The downside - We've had downspouts stolen, and a house just up the way had much of the siding stolen off the garage. We knew it was going to be bad holiday season for retailers back in Oct. when the number of trollers jumped WAY up.

So part of our garbage gets recycled with no effort from us. But I did hang on to old computer equipment for over a year until I could recycle it although it is legal for us to just trash it. And I'm a big on donating to Freecycle, Goodwill, etc.

no , i dont really do any recycling...everything goes in the trash can and , I dont know if they still do, but they used to sort it at the land fill...we do have extra pick ups for things like furniture and appliances..an a couple times a year they set up sites for things like paint, oil, old tires, etc

We have a recycle bin that's picked up the same day as our garbage (but different truck)so it's really easy. Most people in my neighborhood use it but I don't know about other parts of the city. Surely they do since don't even have to separate it in the bin and it's just an open big plastic box to carry down! They'll take glass, cans, plastic 1-7 (until recently was only 1 and 2), newspapers (nothing glossy). A school nearby has a place where you can toss in magazines, catalogs and glossy ads for recycle so that takes care of those. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be anyone handling cardboard. However, most small towns don't have recycle.

Unfortunately, we don't in this area. I am sure we may have a drop point somewhere in town, but it isn't advertised and I've never seen or heard of it.

I wished we had like my Mom. They have separate containers they put out on trash collection day with recycle vs. regular garbage.

One of the controversies of the "new" bulbs in the newspaper is they have a small amount of mercury in them. They say if you break one, leave the area for about 15 minutes. With the widespan mailing of two bulbs to every household in this region, they're concerned about landfills when they all start going out. There is currently set up recycling or safe disposal site for them (due to mercury).

Make that: There is currently NO set up recycling or safe disposal site for them (due to mercury).

We don't have any recyling here but I do save my pop cans and take them to my Mother's. They go to a recyling place and the money she gets for them goes in a fund for my nephew

****************

years ago I dated a man who while on a two week leave from the military after his father's death, found a pint bottle of mercury in his father's workshop. He spent most of his leave calling around his home state trying to get someone to take it. Finally he after going rounds with the EPA he told them if it wasn't gone by Monday, it was going down the storm drain. The local fire dept picked it Monday morning. This was before 9/11, I'm sure he would be arrested on terrorist threats if it happened today.

It used to be really common for men to have a jar of mercury in their workshops. Not sure what they used it for. There was one in my grandparents' garage. We all used to play with it, watching the drops roll around or coating coins or other things with it. Also used to play with any in broken thermometers.(I've asked around and my family wasn't the only one that did that, btw) Of course, we also rode bikes without helmets and
received spankings without DHS being called in.

Well I guess I am in the minority. Being in a super green area of CA, we have curbside recycling. The garbage service provides two big rolling bins, one for cardboard/paper/plastic/glass/metal and one for yard waste. They pick up the recycling bin weekly and the garden can every other week. As the bins are huge, I don't put mine out every time, but usually a couple of times a month.
