SNOW genetics question...???

alieliza Oct 14, 2003 02:55 PM

Ive read that it takes two snows to make a snow. This may be a silly question, maybe a "what came first" or "how did we get here" question. But I am curious to know how did the first one come about if it takes two to make them?

It is a line breed trait just like the tangerine. Keep breeding lighter and lighter animals together and eventually you get white and black. But since it is line breed you do still hatch normal looking animals from time to time even when breeding two "snows" together.

Sometimes you just get surprises, these two came out of the same clutch from my reverse stripe tang. female and my normal het. blizzard (supposed to be anyway) male.

so you dont need two snows to make a snow? maybe the chances are better of getting a snow if you have two?

Yeah, I would say the odds would certainly favor breeding two snows and getting snow offspring as opposed to how I ended up with mine.

No offense but i do not believe that leo is a snow. Many normal leos hatch out lighter in color and will eventually turn normal in coloration. SNow is an actual genetic trait and if the parents to the offspring would either both have to be snow, 1 snow and 1 het snow, or 2 het snows. so unless both your parents are hets then you don't actually have a snow just a lighter in coloration gecko. Most snows when they hatch are extremely white i got to seem some of albeys this year at daytona they were pretty cool.
Nice looking gecko still.

No offense to you but you're not the first to tell me that it's not possible for her to be Snow. I recently wrote to Jodi Aherns at Ground Gecko Freak to inquire about her because I didn't know what morph she could have been, the reply that I got back was that so far she appears to be snow.
I realize that coloration/patterning changes from hatch/juvi/adult, I have several other Leos that hatched a few days before these two did and I've seen tremendous changes in them but so far this girl has not changed ANY from the day she hatched.(hatch date was 9/7) She has no other color than black, white and gray. This pic was taken tonite (10/16) it's not the best, she looks best with some natural light.
