The jokes (which were good, I thought) made me wonder (and since I think you all are over 20).......
DH and I have commented the few years that you just can't joke with young clerks and waitresses because they don't seem to "get it", especially if it involves a play on words.
That's led to discussing between ourselves the reason for that. It's not that young people aren't bright. I think it's that they truly are not exposed to clever or witty off-the-cuff comments since everything is "canned" (media).
He blames the lack of appreciation of wit on the Sesame Street/ instant gratification Generation. (Don't tell him but there are several gens of those now!)
Of course, we both figure that the crudities accepted in today's society play a part. However, "off color" comments aren't new, it's just that things used to be couched in more subtleties.

Thoughts?

Hmmm. While my "we'll need some change" was to a 20 year old, I can't generalize. My waitress was very busy and may not have connected the dots... I think it is more personality/experience based than age based. Some folks are very serious and don't joke much and don't really get jokes and quick humor...

It use to be you'd grow up and join the adults - since the baby boomers changed the world, sometimes I think its more like you hit legal age and and the world adapts to accomodate you. Pop culture is so thin-sliced by age group, self identification and "self-branding" that I think we have less and less in common with one another to joke about. I know when I listen to teenagers joking, often I don't get it, or I think its so dumb I wonder why they are laughing.

They probably think the same about my jokes

Well, you're probably all correct and I'm also just getting old and crochety but really do wonder sometimes.
Yesterday, I'd tried on some skirts in a store. Afterwards, I took one to the girl who'd opened the dressing room and told her they probably wanted to pull that one off the racks since there was a sun streak down one side.
She looked at me blankly so I showed it to her. She just looked kind of funny and then asked me what I said was wrong with it. I told her that the sun had faded it.
She asked how that would happen (I guess, after all, there were no windows in the dressing room). Told her that fabrics would fade if exposed to the sun, like if it had been in a window display or even at some time packed and sun got to the exposed edge for a while.
She shook her head, saying "no". I had to explain again that no one would knowingly buy that skirt in that condition and why.
Not sure she ever believed me.

Oy. I hope you didn't purchase anything by credit card from this clerk and ask for change...

LOL Luckily, she just seemed to be stocking. Maybe they're afraid to let her handle money.

Perhaps a lack of reading?

Makes sense to me. In this fast world, no one seems to realize that to really take in the fullness of a word, sentence, or paragraph, one needs to be able to look at it or go back over the passage. Texting and computer screens allow no nuances of the language which may be picked up from a "real" book.
