Admittedly, I never eat enough fresh fruit. But, the other day bought a "blood orange" out of curiosity. Definitely appropriately named, due to appearance of pulp. Flavor made me think of a cross between orange and cranberry. Have any of you had one? What do you think?
Also, I've never tried one of those star-shaped fruit (forget the name but think it starts with a B) since they're so expensive but am curious about them, too. Anyone ever try one?
Any "new" or unusual fruit you'd suggest trying? Katc

I stick to the old regular fruits. Have never tried any of the new ones. Curious to see what others say though

Blood oranges are grown/originate in Sicily, although other countries have started growing them and they are now out in more abundance. When I lived in Sicily in the 80s, I had blood oranges aplenty and loved them. The problem is, since they were pretty limited to Sicily, I haven't seen them much until lately when other countries (US included) started growing them... I am glad to start seeing them and love them.

I try new fruits and veggies all the time. If my grocrey store sells it, I've probably tried it. Love Mangos, Passion Fruit, Pomegranate, etc...

I've been lucky to have lived in Germany and Italy for 4 years (in the Air Force) and traveled pretty extensively throughout Europe and UK. You starve if you don't try new things when traveling... There have been some things that I would have never dreamed of trying if I they weren't served to me/set in front of me (would have picked something different on a menu): Like fish, beans, and tomatoes for breakfast (England); liver pate for breakfast and escargot for lunch (Belgium); baby squid in pasta (Italy); Beef tongue (Germany)... I tried them all, but of all the strange things served to me, only one didn't set well with me -- yogurt on granola (Holland) and it seems to be the most "bland" of new things tried and pretty popular now in the US. LOL.

Even normal sounding things tast different in a foreign country due to sauces, seasonings, cuts of meat, etc... I've kept the philosophy of not turning my nose up to new things without tasting first and have rarely been disappointed...

Have any of you tried a Tangelo (citrus)? They are my favorite "orange" citrus out now. They are a cross between a mandarin orange and a grapefruit and they are perfect. You have no hint of the grapefruit, so don't let that fool you. They are large like an orange, peel easy with your fingers like a tangerine, and are very sweet and smooth. In fact, you swear they are a super large tangerine, not a cross between an orange and a grapefruit... Try one if you have a chance, they are nothing like you'd think they'd be with "grapefruit" in the mix...

I like tangelos. Didn't realize they were that new.
Also, not opposed to trying new foods at least once. Don't figure I'm ever going to be anyplace exotic to get too strange. LOL One of these days, I'll part with the three-fifty to try a star fruit.

I love grapefruit so that sure would not put me off. Will have to look for them.

Had to stop at the store on the way home so threw in a couple of tangelos! LOL Also, didn't realize they were a cross with grapefruit; never noticed anything like that about them. This store didn't have any blood oranges or other stuff, though, so nothing else in the cart.

Below is a link to the Wiki page on tangelos. They've been around for 3500 years... so not exactly new.

I'll try almost any kind of orange or apple. I'm with Tessie in that clemintines are probably my favorites in the citrus family. Blood oranges are good, too.

I like almost any kind of fruit, I am spoiled tho. Growing up in Northern California with family a few hours away having a great variety of fruit trees, we always had a lot of tree ripened fruit. Also a father who drove a sightseeing bus (he always had a local fruit stand as a stop for the tourists) and brought home fresh fruit and veggies.

Satr fruit are $3.50 now??? I haven't had one in years but I use to buy them when I was veggie years ago. More of a garnish just for the variety on fruit plates/salads. Not a strong flavor and they can be a little waxy, but good.

Don't like gauva, which seems to make me unique among those that have tried it. Always seems a little chemical to me, but I get strange flavors from time to time as a side effect of my allergy meds so its probably just me.

The one fruit I will not eat - bannanas. Hated them from day one according to my mother.

Yogurt and granola (or cherrios) is a standard in our house. Haven't had tongue since my dad made it when we kids. Never much of a seafood eater so it was a surprise the first time I had ahi-ahi sushi. Wonderful stuff.

I won't try much new when eating out. I have a food allergy that has landed me in the hospital a couple of times so I'm very cautious (asking the waitstaff is useless; I've learned the hard way) but I'll try anything offered that someone has cooked in their own home.

Yeck!

Another citrus fruit I thought of I haven't had in years is a kumquat. It is smaller than a tangerine. I haven't had it since I was a kid visiting the Florida Keys, but just loved them. Haven't seen them in a store around here ever (just started seeing Tangelos for the first time a couple years ago around here). You may have them in your area. I just remember loving them straight off the tree... That also reminds me of Key Limes -- Key Lime pie! I make several Key Lime pies each spring and take them in to work. Has become a tradition.

OK. Just replying to this to say I eat yogurt with cereal, too.
Want to hear you go Yuck again.

Never had a kumquat. May have to look for one.
Also never made a key lime pie but like good ones.
