Digging in the dirt

My brother-in-law called the other day to say he had put in his garden which prompted BSM to open up the subject of what type of tomato plants this year and how many....

Is anyone else planning a garden this year? What are you planting?

That is what I have to do this weekend! Start my Polish tomato plants! A friend of my mother-in-law's got them from Poland over 20 years ago, and we have been growing and saving the seeds since then. The tomatoes instead of being a red/orange color are hot pink, and oval in shape with a distinct bulb at one end. One of the docs at work who grew them said they are shaped like a breast. Can't do anything outside planting for another month, then to get peas in. Tomatoes around Memorial day or so. As for tomato types, hubby also will plant Romas, Big Boy, and cherrys, a total of 40 plants! HELP!

we use to grow the most amazing tomatos when I was a kid from a similar source. One year the seeds weren't stored properly and that was the end of the best hamburger tomatoes ever seen in this part of the country. Mom still talks about them wistfully 20 years later.

I grew Roma's last year and they were AWFUL! Mealy, grainy, lots of voids, absolute zero flavor. I was so bummed. But my basil was awful too, first time ever. Both were bought at Walmart.

My brother is really looking forward to gardening season with grocery prices so high. The last two years he has been flooded with fresh produce from his co-workers, this year he is nearly counting on it!

I haven't planted a real garden in twenty years. Way lots of work! One of the relief postmen who does our route brings produce into a neighborhood park once a week so it's an easy place to get good cherry-type tomatoes (don't know real name but they're like eating sugar) and some other things. In early summer there are some guys who bring in candy corn or sugar corn or something like that and my mom gets it which is great.

Yes- we do the full garden with flowers and vegetables. We plant the plum tomatoes since I also can these, beans of all types, sweet corn, squash, onions, potatoes, peppers, and eggplant. My hubby and I both enjoy gardening and having fresh food. We usually plant enough to freeze as well so we seldom buy vegetables at the store.
