Cat Box

cyclopsgrl Oct 13, 2008 04:52 PM

I found a really cool cat item at WalMart I picked up for Pookey. It is a "cat box". It is about the size of a medium cardboard box with a hole cut out of the side, but all softsided vs. cardboard. The "box" sides are thick foam covered by fabric with a hole cut out on one side to get in and out and a thick fake sheepskin on the bottom bottom for napping. He loves boxes and this was perfect -- a soft nap box!

I was so excited when I saw it. Pookey was completely underwhelmed when he saw it. LOL!

He rubbed his face on the outside of it to "mark" it (he knows it's his), but he really hasn't gotten inside of it to curl up. I got him to go in halfway by throwing a favorite catnip toy in, but after about 10 minutes of investigating, he decided it was enough and is now napping in another room on a cat bed he apparently LIKES better, LOL.

He might warm up more tonight when I am in the living room and he comes in to visit me (we both sit in the living room together at night). During the day he sleeps alot unless I am on one room for a long time, then he will join me.

Maybe Pookey will eventually warm up to the catbox.I've bought a tunnel,& cat scratcher and 'exerciser" item from Foster and Smith for my cats. Neither one went over; both items are back in the closet for now. It's difficult to know what cats will like. I thought about buying a cat bed for them, but I have a feeling that neither cat would like it.The fanciest toys and cat products don't always work. Seems like the cats don't read the catalogs. LOL.
What does work are milk carton rings for Star and pieces of crumpled paper for Quentin. Also pens that the cats can roll across the floor.
Don't give up on the cat bed yet; maybe over time Pookey will appreciate it. good luck.

I hear you loud and clear. I bought fancy toys for the boys in the early years and haven't really bought anything for years. Paper sacks, cardboard boxes, milk rings, etc., are standard toys around here.

I saw the "cat box" and decided to step out for once and get it because it was the box he loved, but would be snuggly inside this winter.

Nope. I am pretty sure he won't warm up. I am going to give it to a friend that has a multi-cat household (lives on a farm). Surely one of her 18 cats will like it, LOL.

Pookey stands in front of it with his head shoved in the entrance and meows loudly and then walks away... I am sure if I put an identical cheap cardboard box right beside it, he'd get right in the cardboard one.

The meow is probably saying "yuk, where is the REAL box"

Does it look like this bed that Katrina used to love so much? That was her favorite bed for about 2 years, then she decided that a stack of towels high on a shelf was even more comfy and moved there. Now that shelf is gone and all of her high sleeping places are gone so she either sleeps on a cat pillow hidden away in the closet or on the middle shelf of the cat tree.

It looks like I very badly need to update my photos.

Yes, it looks just like that. And he still wants nothing to do with it a month later, LOL. He'll lay alongside the outside of it and peek in, but will not go inside, LOL...

Oh, poor Pookey! It sounds like he wants to go in it but just can't bring himself to do it yet. Does it only have one opening or 3 like the one that Katrina is in?

All of my cats love cat beds and always have. Now, however, I always wake up in the morning with three of them sleeping with me.

Maybe if you leave the cat bed out another month or so, he'll take the intiative and try it out. Here's hoping!

Ruby -- one opening. I have friends that bought a cat bed that their cat ignored for five years. Now he loves it. LOL

Tammy, I would venture a guess that your friends cat was taking his time to decide whether or not he liked it. Didn't want to make any rapid decisions. Good that he took a chance on it! Great that he now loves it! Hopefully Pookey will decide that he loves his bed too. I'd give him some more time.

My cats have always loved their little beds. I think that's because they had them when they were little kittens.

In the following pictures, the first one is KatyKatt (dark kitty) and 2 of her siblings. The 2nd and 3rd are of Katrina (dark kitty) and 2 of her sibs. Samantha had 2 litters before I was smart enough to get her spayed.

I always love the top pic of the kitties in the bed on the opening screen to CatHobbyist boards...

Both cats always loved all the round cat beds I've gotten this. This enclosed one has thrown Pookey for a loop. I hope he doesn't wait 5 years to like it like my friends' cat. Pookey is 17 now.

That is a cat for you. I have card board boxes all over the house for mine to sit in, sleep in and scratch at. They go through stages, sometimes there are not enough boxes for the cats who want them and other times you could not pay them to get in one. I have kitty condo's that they ignore and cat trees that about 3 of them use consistantly. Picky little furballs!!!
