My Guilty Secret

Cyclopsgrl Jan 18, 2009 06:42 PM

You may recall, I finally upgraded my ancient computer not long ago. It had free samples of different types of games to try (about an hour each trial period). I have never cared for computer games and have never been good at them. Avoided PacMan, and all of that in the 70s and never caught on since... Anyway...

One day recently I decided to try the free trial of role playing game ("FATE" to see what all the hoopla was about. It has good graphics, but is an easier game for beginners and is rated G (no gore). I got hooked. I can't believe at age 42 I am playing a ~computer game~. I bought the off-line version. One reason I like it is I can make the character look like me... and I get a pet side-kick to help me out. I picked an orange cat just like Pookey (and named him "Pookey".

It is so funny. I am killing "monsters" and my faithful companion is wandering around lost and sniffing things and cleaning his face, like real life, LOL. Sometimes he'll even run from a fight, LOL. No other game really interests me and we'll see how long this one does, but I love it primarily for the fact I could bring Pookey with me. I spend more time saving him than myself, LOL...

At the rate I am playing, I won't make it to the final level (45 or something) until I am 82.

When the computer Pookey meows sometimes, Pookey will start meowing in real life, too, LOL!

I hit 'post' before actually typing anything,so trying again.

I never heard of the game "Fate" but I understand how addictive games can be. I started playing World of Warcraft this past summer. My husband has been playing it for a couple years, and he got me involved. My character is a mage, and she has a small orange cat as a companion. The cat doesn't really do anything, but it's nice to have. Kind of like my own cats. LOL. I'm up to level 54. It goes as high as 70. The extended version "Wrath of the Lich King" is for players who have reached 70. World of Warcraft is very involved. You go on quests, upgrade your armor, learn professions, do magic spells, kill monsters, etc. You can even send mail to other players, and talk to them while you're playing. Quests can be solo or in goups.
I never thought that I'd like the game as much as I do. Both of us are about 50 and playing WOW. Hey, even William Shatner promotes it in commercials. So, enjoy "Fate" Tammy. Nothing wrong with adults playing computer games.

I am glad to hear you play. I recalled someone on here did from a converstion a while back.

FATE goes up to dungeon levels in the hundreds, but you usually retire a character after they meet their major "Quest" and then retire and go up to a more difficult player skill level game. It sounds similar to your WoW (quests, armor upgrades, spells, mosters), but it is only solo play and you don't learn professsions.

Currently, I am stuck eternally on level 10 trying to figure out how to dispatch of a HUGE "Abominable Showman" monster. I wish Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer were here to help me. Pookey runs like a chicken when it shows up.

My Mom was a big time gamer for a long time. She was a moderator on the Games Forum of AOL for years, had free unlimited AOL as a moderator -- before unlimited AOL minutes were heard of. She hasn't had time to play since raising her 6 y/o niece. She played things like "Bards Tail" and "SIM"(?). My step-father is still a huge gamer. He likes the war games and builds armies, etc. He stays up on whatever is new.

They are both tickled that I found this one. I don't know how long it will hold my interest, so far so good. I'll get my $20 investment out of it in entertainment, for sure.

Hi There,

My new computer also came with several games, and I must admit that I have gotten hooked as well!

My favorites are the puzzle type, such as Bejeweled, Elements, and Mahjong, but the others are fun, too

I have now gotten into the habit of taking my laptop to bed with me and playing games until I fall asleep.....talk about an addiction!

Take care,
PHKitkat

I haven't had a chance to play this week with work and all, so I have been waiting for this weekend! Hard to not play for several days after just discovering it and getting hooked last weekend! Pookey and I are about to descend into the dungeon, LOL... I hope he wakes up soon so I can start the game.
